  1. (1 other version)Forschendes Lernen in der Empirischen Medizinethik.

  • Teaching medical ethics to experienced staff: participants, teachers and method.T. Nilstun - 2001 - Journal of Medical Ethics 27 (6):409-412.
Almost all articles on education in medical ethics present proposals for or describe experiences of teaching students in different health professions. Since experienced staff also need such education, the purpose of this paper is to exemplify and discuss educational approaches that may be used after graduation. As an example we describe the experiences with a five-day European residential course on ethics for neonatal intensive care personnel. In this multidisciplinary course, using a case-based approach, the aim was to enhance the participants' (...)

  • For example. On the methodological status of case studies in applied ethics.Bert Heinrichs - 2008 - Ethik in der Medizin 20 (1):40-52.
Case studies, both with a view to didactical and argumentative purposes, are widely used in applied ethics. However, case studies are often used without methodological considerations concerning the premises and limitations of these kind of studies as methodological tools within ethics. The present paper critically examines the recourse to – real or fictitious – case studies. Important suggestions will be taken from Kant’s philosophy. Kant himself occasionally uses case studies in his ethical writings. Yet, he also discusses the relevance as (...)

Background Although simulation-based learning using simulated patients is a standard part of training in medical school, it is not yet used to the same extent in the teaching of medical ethics. There are good reasons to use simulation-based teaching, especially in clinical ethics, to gain practical experience through the situation-specific combination of knowledge, skills, and attitudes in the learning process. However, there are certain prerequisites regarding the design of simulations with actors in medical ethics education. Topics Using a concrete example, (...)

  • Process factors facilitating and inhibiting medical ethics teaching in small groups.Miriam Ethel Bentwich & Ya'arit Bokek-Cohen - 2017 - Journal of Medical Ethics 43 (11):771-777.
Purpose To examine process factors that either facilitate or inhibit learning medical ethics during case-based learning. Methods A qualitative research approach using microanalysis of transcribed videotaped discussions of three consecutive small-group learning sessions on medical ethics teaching for three groups, each with 10 students. Results This research effort revealed 12 themes of learning strategies, divided into 6 coping and 6 evasive strategies. Cognitive-based strategies were found to relate to Kamin's model of critical thinking in medical education, thereby supporting our distinction (...)

  • Examining Ethics in Practice: health service professionals' evaluations of in-hospital ethics seminars.Priscilla Alderson, Bobbie Farsides & Clare Williams - 2002 - Nursing Ethics 9 (5):508-521.
This article reviews practitioners’ evaluations of in-hospital ethics seminars. A qualitative study included 11 innovative in-hospital ethics seminars, preceded and followed by interviews with most participants. The settings were obstetric, neonatal and haematology units in a teaching hospital and a district general hospital in England. Fifty-six health service staff in obstetric, neonatal, haematology, and related community and management services participated; 12 attended two seminars, giving a total of 68 attendances and 59 follow-up evaluation interviews. The 11 seminars facilitated by an (...)

  • (1 other version)Research-based learning through self-organized inquiry in empirical medical ethics.Joschka Haltaufderheide & Katja Kühlmeyer - 2022 - Ethik in der Medizin 34 (3):339-360.
Definition of the problem The acquisition of technical and research skills can be promoted in particular in courses that confront students with complex problems. In this article, we present didactic reflections on learning through self-organized inquiry in empirical medical ethics. Arguments Based on the theory of pragmatism, we show how a specific form of research-based learning courses can be realized to promote medical ethical skills. We focus on projects in which students can experience the process of conducting empirical–ethical research. Conclusion (...)
