  1. Heart to Heart: A Relation-Alignment Approach to Emotion’s Social Effects.Brian Parkinson - 2021 - Emotion Review 13 (2):78-89.
This article integrates arguments and evidence from my 2019 monograph Heart to Heart: How Your Emotions Affect Other People. The central claim is that emotions operate as processes of relation alignment that produce convergence, complementarity, or conflict between two or more people’s orientations to objects. In some cases, relation alignment involves strategic presentation of emotional information for the purpose of regulating other people’s behaviour. In other cases, emotions consolidate from socially distributed reciprocal adjustments of cues, signals, and emerging actions without (...)

  • Dynamic Facial Expression of Emotion and Observer Inference.Klaus R. Scherer, Heiner Ellgring, Anja Dieckmann, Matthias Unfried & Marcello Mortillaro - 2019 - Frontiers in Psychology 10.
Research on facial emotion expression has mostly focused on emotion recognition, assuming that a small number of discrete emotions is elicited and expressed via prototypical facial muscle configurations as captured in still photographs. These are expected to be recognized by observers, presumably via template matching. In contrast, appraisal theories of emotion propose a more dynamic approach, suggesting that specific elements of facial expressions are directly produced by the result of certain appraisals and predicting the facial patterns to be expected for (...)

  • Watching More Closely: Shot Scale Affects Film Viewers’ Theory of Mind Tendency But Not Ability.Brendan Rooney & Katalin E. Bálint - 2018 - Frontiers in Psychology 8:281376.
Recent research debates the effects of exposure to narrative fiction on recognition of mental states in others and self, referred to as Theory of Mind. The current study explores the mechanisms by which such effects could occur in fictional film. Using manipulated film scenes, we conducted a between subject experiment ( N = 136) exploring how film shot-scale affects viewers’ Theory of Mind. Specifically, in our methods we distinguish between the trait Theory of Mind abilities (ToM ability), and the state-like (...)

  • A Motivational Account of Convergence in Emotion Expressions Within Groups: The Emotional Conformity Framework.Svenja A. Wolf, Marc W. Heerdink & Gerben A. van Kleef - 2023 - Emotion Review 15 (4):363-379.
Although convergence in emotion expressions within small groups is well documented, the motives that explain why members converge are rarely explicated. We approach expressive convergence from a conformity perspective and introduce the Emotional Conformity Framework, in which we posit that members match their groupmates’ emotion expressions because they are motivated to gain an accurate understanding of reality (informational conformity motive) or to form and maintain social relationships (normative conformity motive). These motives determine members’ standards for correctness, social responses, and plausible (...)

Emotions have traditionally been viewed as intrapersonal phenomena. Over the past decades, theory and research have shifted toward a more social perspective that emphasizes the role of emotional ex...
