  1. Disabling Beliefs? Impaired Embodiment in the Religious Tradition of the West.Nichola Hutchinson - 2006 - Body and Society 12 (4):1-23.
A general dearth of theoretical engagements with the embodied, historical, and especially the religious dimensions of disablement pervades the social sciences. Paradoxically, the religious heritage of the West is commonly identified as the implicit catalyst of many disabling attitudinal barriers impinging on impaired bodies. Addressing this inconsistency, this article extends dominant disability conceptualizations through combining embodiment theories and humanities perspectives. Ultimately the article seeks to demonstrate how interdisciplinary investigation can produce fresh insights into the relationships between attitudes towards physical impairment (...)

  • The Unlikely Comeback of Pascal’s Wager: on the Instability of Secular Post-Modernism.Samuel Lebens & Daniel Statman - 2021 - Philosophia 51 (1):337-348.
Pascal’s wager faces serious criticisms and is generally considered unconvincing. We argue that it can make a comeback powered by an unlikely ally: postmodernism. If one denies the existence of objective facts (e.g. about God or His relation to the world), then various non-theological considerations should come to the fore when considering the rationality of religious commitment and the choice of education for one’s children. In fact, we shall argue that, if one genuinely cares about one’s children, then – in (...)

  • How is the Body of Christ a Meaningful Symbol for the Contemporary Christian Community?SueAnn Johnson - 2009 - Feminist Theology 17 (2):210-228.
This essay attempts to answer the question of how the Body of Christ is a meaningful symbol for the contemporary Christian community from a feminist perspective. Following Graham Ward's account of the displaced body of Jesus Christ, the author argues that the Body of Christ is a distinctly Christian symbol that empowers the contemporary community of Christian believers with a radical new identity, one that is multi-gendered and includes a vast continuum of human and divine embodied experience.

  • The postmodern theology of “neon genesis evangelion” as a criticism.Костянтин Райхерт - 2018 - Докса 2.
This study analyzes Japanese animation series ‘Neon Genesis Evangelion’ in the context of postmodern theology as a cultural analysis and criticism. My selection of the series as a research object is motivated by Hideaki Anno, the creator of the series, who used some Christian concepts, symbols and themes in ‘Neon Genesis Evangelion’. ‘Neon Genesis Evangelion’ in all its variations is a specific mythology of the beginning and ending of life on Earth. The life on Earth began accidentally, and it was (...)

  • Philosophical hermeneutics and contemporary Muslim scholars’ approaches to interpreting scripture.Ali Akbar - 2021 - Philosophy and Social Criticism 47 (5):587-614.
Although the German philosopher Hans-Georg Gadamer was not a religious thinker or theologian, his work and approach have influenced thinkers in the field of theology. This article explores some ‘overlaps’ between Gadamerian hermeneutics and the ideas of some contemporary Muslim scholars such as Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd, Abdolkarim Soroush, Muhammad Mujtahed Shabestari and Hassan Hanafi regarding issues of textual interpretation and understanding. In particular, the article seeks to understand how such ideas have appeared in these Muslim scholars’ approaches to interpreting (...)
