Mistrz Eckhart, postać niejednokrotnie bardzo kontrowersyjna, cieszy się ogromnym zainteresowaniem zarówno wśród teologów, filozofów, a przede wszystkim mistyków. Głównym powodem tej uwagi jest jego koncepcja dotycząca zjednoczenia mistycznego, która opiera się głównie na zagadnieniu iskierki duszy oraz niższej części duszy, która staje się wręcz tożsama z Bogiem. Według Eckharta z jednej strony jesteśmy zrodzeni, natomiast z drugiej strony nie jesteśmy, ponieważ powinniśmy oczekiwać zrodzenia w niższej części duszy. „Narodzenie Boga w duszy” - tak Mistrz Eckhart określa zjednoczenie mistyczne, które należałoby, (...) według niego, umieścić w swoistych kategoriach przebóstwienia. Źródłem zaś całej idei przebóstwienia jest nic innego, jak silne podobieństwo między Bogiem i człowiekiem, a dokładnie jego duszą. Nietrudno odnaleźć tu liczne podobieństwa, które z łatwością można dostrzec między myślą Eckharta i myślą neoplato- ników pogańskich - Plotyna czy Proklosa. Istnieje wiele przesłanek, że Mistrz Eckhart próbuje połączyć idealistyczną filozofię neoplatońską z czysto racjonalną filozofią Tomasza z Akwinu, jednak aspekty Akwinaty są w myśli Mistrza Eckharta niemal niezauważalne. Wydaje się, że liczne trudności związane z interpretacją jego poglądów wynikają z ewidentnego braku podstaw metafizyki w jego dziełach. Jest to nieco dziwne, biorąc pod uwagę fakt, że Mistrz Eckhart doskonale znał poglądy Tomasza z Akwinu, który w sposóbjednoznaczny wypracował koncepcję bytu.Proces zjednoczenia jest w myśli Eckharta przedstawiony w kontekście poznawania. Intelekt stanowi tę władzę w bycie ludzkim, dzięki któremu może on pozostawać w nieustannym związku z Bogiem, co pozwala mu na wznoszenie się. Droga do zjednoczenia z Bogiem zawsze zatem będzie drogą ku Najwyższemu Intelektowi poprzez doskonalenie intelektu w sobie samym. Jest to jednak proces, który wymaga swoistego wyjścia z siebie samego. Wyjście to polega na swego rodzaju dążeniu do jak największej prostoty, co polega na odrzuceniu wszelkiej różnorodności oraz inności. Pojawia się zatem ubóstwo rozumiane w sposób zupełnie paradoksalny, ponieważ w konsekwencji zjednoczenia z Bogiemjawi się onojako największe bogactwo.Warto jednocześnie pamiętać, że ów mistyczny kontakt z Bogiem nie jest czymś zupełnie zewnętrznym dla człowieka. Otóż zjednoczenie mistyczne nie polega na wznoszeniu się duszy do Boga, lecz na ujawnieniu Boga w niższej części duszy, wyższa bowiem część duszy, czyli iskierka duszy,jużjest tożsama z Bogiem. Narodziny Boga to uczestnictwo niższej części duszy w szczęściu iskierki duszy. Eckhart wyraźnie wskazuje, że są to narodziny Syna w duszy, które jednak nie oddala duszy od Ojca. Jest to nadal ten sam rodzaj jedności. Zostaje wręcz zniesiona wszelka jedno- stkowość człowieka, zaciera się jego tożsamość. Ta ontologiczna jedność z samym Bogiem jest jednocześnie jednością z dobrem w najwyższym wymiarze, dlatego też zacierają się wszelkie dylematy moralne, które rozstrzygają się dzięki zupełnej jedności, w której tożsamość bytu ludzkiego z Bogiem nie ma żadnego zróżnicowania. This contribution is an attempt at a different reading of Wojciech Gutkowski’s Journey to Kalopeia, which may be of interest to both Polish and Australian readers in the twenty-first century, since it tries to connect Polish history with the dream of the Antipodes represented by Australia. Gutkowski’s book, unknown until 1913, when it was deemed a utopian novel of little scientific value, gained recognition in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. At that time it was studied as a political treatise (...) and an Enlightenment model for the creation of an ideal utopian-socialist-communist state. This paper offers a new reading of the work in question, discussing its cultural-historical aspects as a precursor of a specifically Polish model of a utopian-colonial state. (shrink)

The aim of the work is to present the conservative views of the journalist and historian Henryk Lisicki and the role he played in the community with which he collaborated, i.e. the Krakow conservatives called the Stańczyk Circle. The source of the article are monographs, brochures, dissertations, essays and articles published in „Przegląd Polski“ by Lisicki. In order to evaluate to what extent Lisicki’s political thought was original, and to what extent it was in conformity with the Stańczyk Circle, the (...) publications of Walerian Kalinka, Stanisław Tarnowski, Michał Bobczyński, Józef Szujski and Stanisław Koźmian were also used. While working on the topic, the author made use of the works specializing in the history of Polish and Western conservative thought published by Ryszard Ludwikowski, Bogdan Szlachta, Jacek Bartyzel, Józef Szacki and the views expressed by the members of the Stańczyk Circle such as Michał Jaskólski, Wojciech Dutka, Stanisław Filipowicz, Henryk Michalak. When examining the above issues, a comparative method was used, tracing both the similarities and differences in the ideas of Lisicki and his colleagues from the Stańczyk Circle. The main thesis formulated in the work is that although Lisicki did not belong to the group of leaders, his close intellectual ties with Stanisław Koźmian gave him a respected position among Krakow conservatives. The analysis of his works confirmed that he was also capable of original reflections which focused on the attitude of the conservatives to the nineteenth-century democratization processes, the evolution of Western absolute monarchies towards the constitution democracies and the expansion of electoral rights. Hence, it was symptomatic for Lisicki and his community to argue, inter alia, for the necessity of rapprochement with moderate liberals, the aim of which was to weaken the danger coming from the revolted masses which were being under the influence of radicals. Celem artykułu jest ukazanie zasadniczych różnic między rozumieniem pojęć kontyngencji, wolności, indywidualności w filozofii Szkota w odniesieniu do tradycji arystotelesowskiej. Podkreślam, że istotnymi elementami koncepcji Szkota, będącymi wyraźnym odejściem od klasycznego arystotelizmu, są: (1) odrzucenie zasady pełności, (2) interpretacja teraźniejszości jako niekoniecznej, (3) rozwinięcie pojęcia synchronicznej kontyngencji, (4) zerwanie związku między niezmiennością i koniecznością. W swej antropologii Szkot kładzie nacisk na (1) pojęcie wolnej wolijako władzy autonomicznej i zdolnej do samodeterminacji, (2) przypisuje woli racjonalność, która nie polega na zależności woli (...) od intelektu czy wiedzy, (3) odchodzi od arystotelesowskiego eudajmonizmu. Boga traktuje jako zdolnego do poznania i miłowania jednostkowych, kontyn- gentnych bytów. W swej aksjologii podkreśla pozytywny wymiar indywidualności, wielości i nie- powtarzalnościjednostek. ABSTRACT The main aim of this article is to investigate the reception of Owen’s ideas in the nineteenth-century Polish context. I argue that Owen’s ideas did not attract as much attention as those of, amongst others, Charles Fourier, Félicité de Lamennais, or – in the second half of the century – Karl Marx. Despite being overshadowed by other Romantic socialists, Owen’s reception in Poland can be described as having been marked by three phases. Though we can determine the general direction (...) of this reception, we can only demarcate the rough time frames of it. The first phase may be traced from 1830 until around 1860. It was marked by Polish radicals’ rejection of Owen’s ideas. The phase, which may be dated from roughly 1848, saw the reception of and critical engagement with Owen’s ideas by Polish conservatives. Ironically, conservatives represented the first political current in the Polish context, which made a real effort to analyse and engage with his ideas seriously. Finally, the third phase of reception was constituted by Marxist and modern socialists, who, in seeing themselves at the end of an historical teleology, read Owen, and other early socialists, as their ideological forefathers. It is legitimate to speak about two philosophies of education as presented by Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The first of the philosophies was elucidated in Emil, or on Education and its aim was to provide principles governing the process of upbringing of the man. Philo-sophical grounds for the second one were comprised in The Social Contract, however description of the education itself is delivered by Considerations on the Government of Poland. This concept refers to the civic education, education of the political community (...) mem-ber. Alexis de Tocqueville depicts vision of education that varies fundamentally from the both grounded in Rousseau’s writing. Toc-queville’s vision stays at odds with the philosophy given in Emil, because it concerns civic aspects of the education. It is also not com-pliant with the concept stemming from Considerations, due to the fact that it stresses the role of other than state subjects in the edu-cation. The article comments on all three concepts of education out-lined above and finally relates them to the concept of positive and negative liberty provided by Isaiah Berlin. (shrink)

The aim of the paper is to compare four versions of the text of Waitingfor Godot: the French original, Beckett’s own translation into English and two Polish renderings done by Julian Rogoziński and Antoni Libera. The article starts with a short discussion concerning rules governing the translation process and then its evaluation. While working on the transposition of the French original into English, Beckett introduced numerous changes, this being due to his sensitivity to the very quality of each of the (...) languages and specific references characteristic of the two cultures. Antoni Libera, an expert in Beckett’s oeuvre, argues that Beckett’s translations should be more adequately described as second language versions and that the artist recommended further translations based on his two language versions. Libera himself followed this recommendation while translating Beckett’s works into Polish. Upon publication, he provided illuminating notes, shedding light on the differences in Beckett’s versions and providing critical insight into the texts. Julian Rogoziński, on the other hand, based his translation of Waiting for Godot only on the French original. This accounts for the fact that, at times, his rendering of the text lacks precision and may not even be quite understandable. Rogoziński’s version is less satisfactory than that of Libera due to the fact that it was written earlier and by an older man, which at times results in the use of old-fashioned, outdated Polish diction and structures.
