Tonyeme Bilakani - 2012 - Meta: Research in Hermeneutics, Phenomenology, and Practical Philosophy 4 (1):106-129.
School is an educational institution designed to socialize future citizens that are Students, to adapt them to the Society to which they belong. But we cannot adapt without forcing. This means that all education, including School, needs authority that compels. As all authority is similar to constraint, the question we need to ask ourselves is how to educate in school in a democratic society? In other words, how can school combine constraint with the school’s goal of making learners free? The (...)

  • Understanding Appearance-Enhancing Drug Use in Sport Using an Enactive Approach to Body Image.Denis Hauw & Jean Bilard - 2017 - Frontiers in Psychology 8:256787.
From an enactive approach to human activity, we suggest that the use of appearance-enhancing drugs is better explained by the sense-making related to body image rather than the cognitive evaluation of social norms about appearance and consequent psychopathology-oriented approach. After reviewing the main psychological disorders thought to link body image issues to the use of appearance-enhancing substances, we sketch a flexible, dynamic and embedded account of body image defined as the individual’s propensity to act and experience in specific situations. We (...)

  • Feeling good vibrations in dialogical relations.Beata Stawarska - 2008 - Continental Philosophy Review 41 (2):217-236.
I engage phenomenological and empirical perspectives on dialogical relations in infancy in a mutually enlightening and challenging relation. On the one hand, the empirical contributions provide evidence for the primacy of first-to-second person interrelatedness in human sociality, as opposed to the claim of primary syncretism heralded by Merleau-Ponty, and also in distinction from the ego-alter ego model routinely used in phenomenology. On the other hand, phenomenological considerations regarding the lived affective experience of dialogical relatedness enrich and render intelligible the psychological (...)

  • Merleau-Ponty on the Mirror Stage: Affect and the Genesis of the Body Proper in the Sorbonne Lectures.Shiloh Whitney - 2018 - Journal of Phenomenological Psychology 49 (2):135-163.
While Merleau-Ponty’sPhenomenology of Perceptionrelies on the descriptive register of the body proper, his Sorbonne lectures on child psychology investigate the genesis of the experience of a body as one’s own. I demonstrate the uniqueness of Merleau-Ponty’s account of the narcissistic affect and sociality involved in this developmental process, distinguishing his account vis-à-vis Wallon’s and Lacan’s studies of the mirror stage. I conclude that in Merleau-Ponty’s account, (1) the experience of the body proper is not singular, but encompasses a range of (...)
