  1. Recommendations for Hosting Audience Comments Based on Discourse Ethics.Yu Zhang & Mark Cenite - 2010 - Journal of Mass Media Ethics 25 (4):293-309.
As a result of simultaneous developments, including the proliferation of opportunities for online feedback, the application of discourse ethics to journalism, and a greater emphasis on journalistic accountability, the time is ripe for revisiting opportunities that online mechanisms provide for holding journalists accountable to audiences. This paper proposes recommendations to guide hosting online comments in light of the Habermasian framework of discourse ethics developed by Glasser and Ettema (2008). It also explores the limits of such approaches in nations with different (...)

  • Ethical Orientation and Judgments of Chinese Press Journalists in Times of Change.Francis L. F. Lee & Zhian di CuiZhang - 2015 - Journal of Media Ethics 30 (3):203-221.
Against the background of media and social transformation, this study examines Chinese press journalists' ethical orientation and tolerance for ethically controversial practices. The former captures journalists' theoretical conception of ethics along a consequentialist versus absolutist spectrum; the latter speaks to journalists' ethical judgment in relation to concrete practices. Analysis of a survey of press journalists found that a substantial minority of the respondents were subscribing to ethical relativism. Different types of controversial reporting practices were tolerated to different extents. Multivariate analysis (...)

  • Online Newsrooms as Communities of Practice: Exploring Digital Journalists' Applied Ethics.José Alberto García-Avilés - 2014 - Journal of Mass Media Ethics 29 (4):258-272.
Based on qualitative interviews with online media professionals conducted in several Spanish online newsrooms, this article explores the ethical issues that are debated by digital journalists, following the implementation of convergence and multiplatform production. Through the journalists' perceptions about the challenges of convergence and the demands of online news production, the main areas of ethical conflicts are examined. Building on Alasdair MacIntyre's theory about communities of practice, I argue that the standards and practices currently being developed in online newsrooms provide (...)

  • Social Distance, Ethics, and Engagement with Social Networks: How Do They Interact?Cid Gonçalves Filho, Flavia Braga Chinelato & Renata de Sousa da Silva Tolentino - 2024 - Journal of Media Ethics 39 (1):33-48.
Social distance often motivates consumers to increase their interactions through social networking sites. This study identifies antecedents of consumer brand usage and brand connection of SNSs, under the influence of consumer perceived ethics (CPE), during the COVID pandemic and afterward (N = 308). The proposed model was tested using partial least squares-structural equation modeling with AMOS 23. In both periods, this study shows CPE consistently affects consumer engagement and involvement. The results demonstrate that in social isolation, affective engagement has higher (...)

  • Media Credibility and Journalistic Role Conceptions: Views on Citizen and Professional Journalists among Citizen Contributors.Deborah S. Chung & Seungahn Nah - 2013 - Journal of Mass Media Ethics 28 (4):271-288.
This study identifies citizen journalists' role conceptions regarding their news contributing activities and their perceptions of professional journalists' roles. Specifically, the ethical criterion of media credibility was assessed to identify predictors on their perceptions of roles. Analyses reveal citizen journalists perceive their roles to be generally similar to professional journalists and even rated certain roles more prominently for themselves. Further, their perceptions of media credibility were found to function as a core belief in how they assessed their roles and also (...)

  • A Virtue Ethics Critique of Silverstone's Media Hospitality.Sandra L. Borden - 2015 - Journal of Media Ethics 30 (3):168-185.
Roger Silverstone proposed media hospitality as an important element of media ethics. I agree that media hospitality can make a valuable contribution to media ethics. However, I have doubts about grounding media hospitality in what has been referred to as the “deductive abstractions and absolutist language of much media ethics theorizing” founded on Enlightenment assumptions. Despite his own reservations about Enlightenment theorizing, I propose that Silverstone's account ultimately suffers from these problems of abstraction and absolutism, as seen most clearly from (...)
