Mainstream analytic epistemology regards knowledge as the property of individuals, rather ‎than groups. Drawing on insights from the reality of knowledge production and dissemination ‎in the sciences, I argue, from within the analytic framework, that this view is wrong. I defend ‎the thesis of ‘knowledge-level justification communalism’, which states that at least some ‎knowledge, typically knowledge obtained from expert testimony, is the property of a ‎community and possibly none of its individual members, in that only the community or some ‎members (...) of it collectively possesses knowledge-level justification for its individual members’ ‎beliefs. I address several objections that individuals, qua individuals, have or are able to ‎acquire knowledge-level justification for all the beliefs they obtain from expert testimony. I ‎argue that the problem I identify with individualism is invariant under any specific account of ‎justification, internalist or externalist. ‎. (shrink)

According to one prominent critique of mainstream epistemology, discoveries about what it takes to know or justifiedly believe that p can’t provide the right kind of intellectual guidance. As Mark Webb puts it, “the kinds of principles that are developed in this tradition are of no use in helping people in their ordinary epistemic practices.” In this paper I defend a certain form of traditional epistemology against this “regulative” critique. Traditional epistemology can provide—and, indeed, can be essential for—intellectual guidance. The (...) reason is that, in many cases, how you should proceed intellectually depends on what you already know or justifiedly believe: how you should treat counterevidence to your beliefs, for example, can depend on whether those beliefs count as knowledge. Therefore, to get guidance on how to proceed intellectually, it will often be essential to be able to figure out what you know or justifiedly believe. And to do that it will often be helpful to try to figure out what it takes to count as knowledge or justified belief in the first place. To do this is precisely to engage in mainstream epistemology. Temeljni je cilj ovog rada primjena općenite ideje evidencijalizma na poseban slučaj svjedočanstva i povjerenja koje određujem kao postupak prihvaćanja iskaza drugih ljudi. U prvom dijelu, zagovaram poziciju evidencijalizma u pogledu povjerenja, odnosno stav da je epistemički odgovorno povjerenje stvar posjedovanja odgovarajuće evidencije ili epistemičkih razloga. U drugom dijelu, razmatram primjedbe koje mogu biti upućene ovoj poziciji od strane anti redukcionista i nihilista. Konačno, u trećem dijelu nastojim braniti evidencijalizam protiv upućenih kritika, te predlažem kriterij primjerene evidencije za epistemički odgovorno (...) povjerenje.The main purpose of this paper is to apply the general idea of evidentialism to the very specific case of testimony and trust characterized as being the procedure of acceptance the other people reports. In the first part, I argue in favour of evidentialism concerning trust, a viewpoint that takes epistemically responsible trust as a matter of evidence. In the second part, I analyze the objections that can be put on this kind of evidentialism by anti-reductionism and nihilism. In the third part, I try to defend evidentialism against this critique and I propose the evidential standard of epistemically responsible trust. (shrink)
