La longue note consacrée par Max Weber aux danseuses traditionnelles indiennes dans son étude sur la sociologie religieuse de l'inde, Hindouisme et bouddhisme, est commentée ici à partir d'une comparaison avec une des premières études allemandes évoquant la danse de l'Inde, L 'Histoire universelle de la danse de Curt Sachs. Trois thématiques sont abordées: le rapport entre arts du corps et savoir lettré; la spécificité des arts sacrés, en l'occurrence des arts magiques et des formes qui leur correspondent, ainsi que (...) des modes d'apprentissage qui assurent leur transmission (entendue comme un « charisme héréditaire ») ; la vision des femmes et la notion du pur et de l'impur. Zusammenfassung Dieser Aufsatz widmet sich Riehls Auseinandersetzung mit empirischen Sozial- und Humanwissenschaften. Der Neukantianer Riehl wurde in diesem Zusammenhang bisher kaum berücksichtigt. Ein großes Interesse verdient er sich aufgrund seiner Ablehnung des Ansatzes der Südwestdeutschen Schule des Neukantianismus, die sich aus seiner erkenntnistheoretischen Position ergibt. Er sprach sich gegen einen Methodendualismus zwischen Geistes- und Naturwissenschaften und für eine wertfreie Geschichtswissenschaft aus. Ähnlich wie Karl Lamprecht fordert er eine strikte Trennung zwischen Wissenschaft und Weltanschauung und die Implementierung einer kausal-genetischen Betrachtungsweise. Aus (...) diesem Grund trat er in den späten 1880er Jahren als wichtiger Förderer und Wegbereiter der Ethnologie in Freiburg in Erscheinung, förderte in Berlin Anfang der 1900er Jahre die Wissenschaftstheorie wesentlich und erwarb sich schließlich auch als ein Förderer der experimentellen Psychologie Verdienste. Dans le fragment sur la musique, Max Weber réduit l'objet musical empiriquement descriptible au « médium technique » utilisé par chaque culture, dans la mesure où son analyse reste hétérogène aux valorisations esthétiques. Weber souligne que la reproduction phonographique du son constitue la condition de possibilité d'une analyse empirique du matériau musical, le point de départ d'une musicologie comparée moderne. Approche empirique et comparaison culturelle apparaissent ainsi reliées dans un chiasme « empirico-transcendental » qui fait du médium technique à la (...) fois un objet et un a priori. Max Weber and Ernst Toller are regarded as political opposites with the former viewed as the responsible realist and the latter as an ethical idealist. I argue that this contrast between the two is not as great as is customarily thought.

This paper studies five approaches on the future of alterity that awaits ideas and doctrines. According to these predictions, embedded in texts by Weber, Meinecke, Butterfield, Merleau-Ponty and Koselleck, the coming forms of thinking shall endure the same destiny affecting the ideas of the past because they will evolve without relying on historical sameness. The future of Western thought, in short, is bound to an unpredictable “destiny of otherness”. These claims, taken together, outline a redirection of the genealogical untangling to (...) the future. While they persist on linking present phenomena to realities deemed historically “other”, they also foresee that this fate of alterity will prevail in future times, an enlargement of scope that results in a symmetrically expanded genealogy. This universalized “discourse of historical otherness” makes evident that genealogy, in addition to its involvement with past vicissitudes of ideas and beliefs, is also bound to explore their future emmeshing with alterity. Its “forward-looking inflection” will proscribe historiographic prolepsis, contending that the destiny of otherness awaiting ideas and doctrines excludes any surmise about the meaning they will be given in the future.
