  1. Empathy, Intentionality and "Other Mind": from Phenomenology to Contemporary Versions of Naturalism.O. S. Pankratova - 2023 - Anthropological Measurements of Philosophical Research 23:105-116.
_Purpose._ This article discusses researching the nature and basic structure of acts of empathy. Such research first requires answering the question: are empathic acts intentional acts of our consciousness? If the answer to this question is affirmative, then there is a need to answer the following questions: what are the features of acts of empathy as intentional ones? And can such acts be qualified as opening a special and complex type of access (epistemic, social, and ethical) to "other minds"? _Theoretical (...)

  • An examination of Max Scheler’s phenomenological ethics.Stephen R. Wigmore - unknown
This thesis examines the little-known phenomenological ethical theory of Max Scheler, discussed in his Formalism in Ethics and Non-Formal Ethics of Values and The Nature of Sympathy, also bringing in various other complementary philosophers. It argues that Scheler’s theory, when supplemented with complementary ideas, is superior to those offered by contemporary analytic intuitionism and other meta-ethical theories. It argues that a theory of pluralist emotive intuitionism provides a better description of both our experience of ethical value and the logical requirements (...)

  • Beyond Contagion of Violence: Passionate Love and Empathy in the Thought of René Girard and Max Scheler.Bogumił Strączek - 2021 - Human Studies 45 (1):157-172.
In his last book René Girard depicts apocalypse as disclosure of mimetic violence that is world-ending. He claims that in times of violent pandemic we are not called to fight for this world, but follow Christ in his withdrawal from the world. However, such an assertion creates serious theoretical and practical issues for the effort to heal interhuman relations from the virus of mimetic hostility. I argue for the importance of restoring a foundational distinction between passionate love and acquisitive mimetic (...)

  • Present Contemporaries and Absent Consociates: Rethinking Schütz's “We Relation” Beyond Copresence.Greti-Iulia Ivana - 2016 - Human Studies 39 (4):513-531.
This article analyzes the structure of the “we relation” drawing on Alfred Schütz's theoretical framework. It argues for a flexibilization of the initial framework in order to capture not only the tension, but also the variations in the relation between the lived experience of the other in lived duration and the reflection upon the other, through which meaning is constructed. In order to do so, it revisits Schütz’s claims about immersion into togetherness as part of the experience of copresence and (...)
