  1. Мерзость запустения.Andrej Poleev - 2020 - Enzymes 18.
Итак, когда увидите мерзость запустения, речённую через пророка Даниила, стоящую на святом месте, – читающий да разумеет, … знайте, что близко, при дверях пришествие Сына Человеческого.

  • Gender Capital and Male Bodybuilders.Tristan S. Bridges - 2009 - Body and Society 15 (1):83-107.
Cultural capital and hegemonic masculinity are two concepts that have received intense attention. While both have received serious consideration, critique and analysis, the context or field-specificity of each is sometimes ignored. They have been used in a diversity of ways. Using ethnographic and interview data from a US male bodybuilding community, this study highlights one useful employment. Hegemonic masculinity takes different shapes in different fields of interaction, acting as a form of cultural capital: gender capital. Inherent in this discussion are (...)

  • The NHS: Sticking Fingers in Its Ears, Humming Loudly.Rachael Pope - 2017 - Journal of Business Ethics 145 (3):577-598.
Evidence exists that the UK National Health Service has had, over many years, persistent problems of negative and intimidating behaviour towards staff from other employees. The evidence also suggests the organisational responses to negative behaviour can be inadequate. A conceptual model of organisational dysfunction was proposed to assist in explaining those responses and the overall culture in the NHS. Through research this model has been tested. Based upon the findings, an extended and developed model of organisational dysfunction is presented. A (...)

  • Sins of the Father’s Firm: Exploring Responses to Inherited Ethical Dilemmas in Family Business. [REVIEW]Reginald A. Litz & Nick Turner - 2013 - Journal of Business Ethics 113 (2):297-315.
How do individuals respond when they perceive that their family business has been built upon unethical business conduct? Drawing on an expanded version of Hirschman’s typology of generic responses to declining situations (Exit, Voice and Loyalty: Responses to Decline in Firms, Organizations, and States, Harvard University Press, Cambridge, MA, 1970), which includes responses of Exit, Voice, Loyalty, and Neglect, we offer a model that predicts probability of intended response behavior as a function of normative obligation (i.e., what one perceives ought (...)

  • Towards a revised theory of collective learning processes: Argumentation, narrative and the making of the social bond.Klaus Eder, Marcos Engelken Jorge & Bernhard Forchtner - 2020 - European Journal of Social Theory 23 (2):200-218.
Societies change; and sociology has, since its inception, described and evaluated these changes. This article proposes a revised theory of collective learning processes, a conceptual framework which addresses ways in which people make sense of and cope with change. Drawing on Habermas’ classic proposal, but shifting the focus from argumentation towards storytelling, it explains how certain articulations allow for collective learning processes (imagining more inclusive orders), while others block learning processes (imagining more exclusive orders). More specifically, the article points to (...)

  • The Mundane Dialectic of Enlightenment: Typification as Everyday Identity Thinking.Ryan Gunderson - 2020 - Human Studies 43 (4):521-543.
To make Adorno’s difficult notion of “identity thinking” more amendable to sociological research, this project brings his Negative Dialectics into conversation with Schutz’s theory of typification. When revised with Adorno’s attention to political economy and the pathologies of reification, Schutz’s framework allows for an analysis of identity thinking in everyday life. Both theorists argue that categories of thought: automatically subsume objects for pragmatic yet socially conditioned reasons, are socially formed, transferred, and selected, and suppress particularizing characteristics of objects. Their overlapping (...)

  • The Hoffman Report in historical context: A study in denial.Dan Aalbers - 2022 - History of the Human Sciences 35 (5):27-50.
Using the concept of social denial, this article puts the American Psychological Association's (APA’s) pattern of willful blindness, identified by independent reviewer David Hoffman, in historical context by examining the contributions of Cold War social scientists to the CIA's KUBARK torture manual, and discusses the implications of this history for the reform of the APA's ethics policies. David Hoffman found that the leadership of the APA colluded with Department of Defense (DoD) to ensure that the APA's ethical policies were no (...)

  • Reducing Ethical Hazards in Knowledge Production.Alan Cottey - 2016 - Science and Engineering Ethics 22 (2):367-389.
This article discusses the ethics of knowledge production from a cultural point of view, in contrast with the more usual emphasis on the ethical issues facing individuals involved in KP. Here, the emphasis is on the cultural environment within which individuals, groups and institutions perform KP. A principal purpose is to suggest ways in which reliable scientific knowledge could be produced more efficiently. The distinction between ethical hazard and ethical behaviour is noted. Ethical hazards cannot be eliminated but they can (...)

Drawing on Austin’s speech act theory and on related theories of performativity and positioning, this article analyses the public confessions during the 1990s by three prominent state actors in Turkey about their direct involvement in state crimes against Kurds and left-wing political opponents. All three cases received significant media attention at the time. The aim of the article is not only to shed new light on those specific confessions by the perpetrators within the Turkish context, but also to develop further (...)

  • Don’t Talk About the Elephant: Silence and Ethnic Boundaries in Postwar Bosnia-Herzegovina.Ana Mijić - 2018 - Human Studies 41 (1):137-156.
In December 1995, the guns fell silent on Bosnia-Herzegovina and so did much dialogue. Silence is omnipresent in this postwar society: People conceal their suffering; they remain silent about their potential responsibility and guilt and—in interethnic encounters—the violent past is often wholly screened out. Drawing on a literature analysis as well as own interviews and ethnographic observations conducted in Bosnia-Herzegovina since 2007, the article focuses on the interplay between silence and the constitution of ethnic boundaries. In accordance with the literature, (...)

This case study, involving in-depth interviewing with 60 employees and an extensive newspaper analysis, illuminates that public discourse in and around the lived experience of job loss is not only minimal, but that there are discursive mechanisms that deflect attention away from the interests of the human beings facing unemployment. Discursive control as a focus of critical organizational communication scholarship provides the context for exploring the data. Silence and false information emerge in all of the discourse communities as mechanisms of (...)
