  • (1 other version)Der junge Carnap in historischem Kontext: 1918-1935 / Young Carnap in an Historical Context: 1918–1935.Christian Damböck & Gereon Wolters (eds.) - forthcoming - Springer.

  • The material memory of history: Edgar Zilsel’s epistemology of historiography. [REVIEW]Monika Wulz - 2012 - Studies in East European Thought 64 (1-2):91-105.
The paper focuses on the concept of matter and the material in Edgar Zilsel’s considerations about historiographical methods in the context of the Marxist debates on the materialist conception of history in the 1920s and 1930s (György Lukács, Max Adler). It sheds light on Zilsel’s understanding of matter as fluctuating, interfering processes in the lapse of time and the related concept of irreversible laws and relates it to Ernst Mach’s philosophy and to Richard Semon’s theory of mneme . Finally, it (...)

  • A Political Meaning of “Scientific Philosophy”? The Case of Edgar Zilsel.Oliver Schlaudt - 2018 - Philosophia Scientiae 22:257-287.

In this article, I aim to show the substantial ways in which Edgar Zilsel can be considered to have been a politically engaged philosopher of science and provide a reconstruction of his philosophical work in the time before his forced emigration to the United States. In line with Monika Wulz and with my own reconstruction of the Vienna Circle’s political engagement, I reject Oliver Schlaudt’s 2018 thesis according to which Zilsel cannot be considered a politically engaged philosopher of science. My (...)

  • Rhetoric and double hermeneutics in the human sciences.Dimitri Ginev - 1998 - Human Studies 21 (3):259-271.
Based on an analysis of double hermeneutics in the human sciences, a distinction between a weak and a strong rhetorical analysis of human-scientific research is introduced, taking account of the self-reflective character of hermeneutic interpretation. The paper argues that there are three hermeneutic topics in the research process for human-scientific experience, which are associated with applying specific rhetorical tools. The three topics are described under the following rubrics: (a) bridging the gap between experience-near and experience-distant concepts; (b) achieving integrity of (...)

  • Carnap’s Turn to the Thing Language.Ansten Klev - 2018 - Philosophia Scientiae 22:179-198.
Rudolf Carnap’s contributions to the Paris 1935 Congress for scientific philosophy signal three important changes in his philosophy: his semantic turn; what would later be called the “liberalization of empiricism”; and his adoption of the so-called thing language as a basis for the language of science. This paper examines this third change. In particular, it considers Carnap’s motivation for adopting the thing language as the protocol language of unified science and the virtues of the thing language in comparison with other (...)
