As cities grow, so do their carbon footprints. A global study by Yang et al. (2025) offers new insight into how urban expansion shapes carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, using data from over 39,000 cities between 2000 and 2020. By combining remote sensing and geographic information systems, the research captures emissions patterns at an unprecedented scale and resolution.
