Abstract

The concept of planetary boundaries has also emerged in the context of the debate on the shift of the planetary system from the Holocene to the Anthropocene, which programmatically seeks to formulate a systemic approach to global sustainability. It aims to define the biophysical and biochemical planetary boundaries within which humanity can safely function. The most recent version of this concept programmatically transcends the boundaries of the natural and social sciences by seeking to include the categories of environmental security and justice in the quantification of identified key planetary boundaries. The paper focuses on the significance of this shift for political-philosophical reflection on the concept of the Anthropocene as a starting point for environmental political philosophy.
