Abstract

This paper explores how technology can address challenges for undertrial prisoners in India, who often face prolonged detentions due to systemic delays and limited resources. Focusing on legal assistance, case management, and prisoner welfare, the research demonstrates how technology can improve access to justice, speed up case processing, and support inmate welfare. Secure communication tools enable prisoners to connect with lawyers, streamlining legal aid and providing timely case updates. Pilot projects show promising results, with a 30% reduction in case-processing times and a 40% improvement in lawyer-prisoner communication. Despite infrastructure and training challenges, the report recommends scalable tech solutions across Indian prisons, urging government collaboration and policy reforms to digitally transform the criminal justice system. Ultimately, the findings underscore technology’s potential to create a more accessible, efficient, and equitable justice system for undertrial prisoners.
