As mining ventures extend beyond Earth’s surface into the deep sea and outer space, a new dimension of ecological politics is taking shape—defined by what researchers term excess. In their paper, Collins et al. (2025) explore how expanding extractive frontiers produce material and social consequences that spill beyond intended boundaries, thereby challenging conventional systems of environmental governance.
