  • Humboldtian plant geography after Humboldt: the link to ecology.Malcolm Nicolson - 1996 - British Journal for the History of Science 29 (3):289-310.
In his classic textbook,The History of Biology, Erik Nordenskiöld suggested that there had existed, throughout the nineteenth century, not one but two distinct forms of plant geography. He designated one of these traditions of inquiry ‘floristic’ plant geography, tracing its origins back to the work of Carl Linnaeus on species and their distributions. The second form Nordenskiöld termed ‘morphological’, by which he meant that its practitioners concentrated upon the study of vegetation rather than flora. He located the origins of this (...)

  • Chemistry and Physiology in Their Historical and Philosophical Relations.Eduard Glas - 1979 - Delft University Press.
On the whole our study has made a plea for the combined research into the history, methodology and philosophy of science. There is an intricate communication between these aspects of science, philosophy being both a fruit of scientific developments and a higher-level frame of reference for discussion on the inevicable metaphysical issues in science. As such philosophy can be very useful to science, but should never impose its ideas on the conduct of scientists . ... • The Strategy of Life: Teleology and Mechanics in Nineteenth-Century German Biology.Timothy Lenoir - 1982 - D. Reidel.
In the early nineteenth century, a group of German biologists led by Johann Friedrich Blumenbach and Karl Friedrich Kielmeyer initiated a search for laws of biological organization that would explain the phenomena of form and function and establish foundations for a unified theory of life. The tradition spawned by these efforts found its most important spokesman in Karl Ernst von Baer. Timothy Lenoir chronicles the hitherto unexplored achievements of the practitioners of this research tradition as they aimed to place functional (...)
