Jurgen Habermas rarely mentioned China and the developing countries. This book demonstrates that Habermas' theory of modernity and modernization, based on his theory of communicative action, is more relevant to China than any other theory of modernization. Habermas' theory provides a better conceptual basis for a new and rewarding interpretation of the Chinese discourse of modernization that finally led to the idea of socialist modernization with Chinese characteristics.
