  • Gersonide, le pseudo-Tūsi, et le postulat des paralléles.Tony Lévy - 1992 - Arabic Sciences and Philosophy 2 (1):39.
Euclid's Elements were translated into Hebrew from Arabic in the 13th century; but precious few of the Arabic commentaries have come down to us in a Hebrew version. Nonetheless, a study of several texts dealing with the Fifth Postulate of Book I reveals that the Hebrew authors are greatly indebted to Arabic sources.

  • Analysis and synthesis in John Playfair's Elements of Geometry.Amy Ackerberg-Hastings - 2002 - British Journal for the History of Science 35 (1):43-72.
John Playfair , professor of mathematics and natural philosophy at the University of Edinburgh, is a relatively obscure figure today, best known as the popularizer of James Hutton's theory of geology. However, Playfair was also involved in mathematics for most of his active career, with his most widely distributed publication, Elements of Geometry , shaping the mathematics education for at least thirteen thousand British students during the nineteenth century. This study focuses on the mathematical context surrounding Elements of Geometry. Specifically, (...)

  • Mathematical diagrams from manuscript to print: examples from the Arabic Euclidean transmission.Gregg De Young - 2012 - Synthese 186 (1):21-54.
In this paper, I explore general features of the “architecture” (relations of white space, diagram, and text on the page) of medieval manuscripts and early printed editions of Euclidean geometry. My focus is primarily on diagrams in the Arabic transmission, although I use some examples from both Byzantine Greek and medieval Latin manuscripts as a foil to throw light on distinctive features of the Arabic transmission. My investigations suggest that the “architecture” often takes shape against the backdrop of an educational (...)
