  1. The masculine birth of time: temporal frameworks of early modern natural philosophy.Rob Iliffe - 2000 - British Journal for the History of Science 33 (4):427-453.
This paper sets out to examine the various temporal frameworks that made up the discourse of early modern natural philosophy. It takes into account a range of views and debates such as the comparison between the achievements of ancients and moderns, belief in the gradual decay of the earth and/or the cyclical nature of time, appreciation of recent improvements in the material conditions of life , and projections of future techno-scientific progress, adherence to the doctrine of the prisca sapientia, and (...)

  • Mechanizing magnetism in restoration England—the decline of magnetic philosophy.Stephen Pumfrey - 1987 - Annals of Science 44 (1):1-21.
The magnet served three interests of Restoration mechanical philosophers: it provided a model of cosmic forces, it suggested a solution to the problem of longitude determination, and evidence of its corpuscular mechanism would silence critics. Magnetic philosophy lost its coherence and became subsumed (...)

It is indeed a pleasure to introduce this collection of essays that honor one of the world's leading scholars in the field of utopian studies. I have known Lyman Tower Sargent since 1986, when upon moving to St. Louis I was delighted to discover that we lived a short distance away from each other. Our collaboration on a variety of projects has continued ever since then, most notably in the series Utopianism and Communitarianism, published by Syracuse University Press; as intellectual (...)
