The Crisis of European Sciences and Transcendental Phenomenology, Husserl's last great work, is important both for its content and for the influence it has had on other philosophers. In this book, which remained unfinished at his death, Husserl attempts to forge a union between phenomenology and existentialism. Husserl provides not only a history of philosophy but a philosophy of history. As he says in Part I, "The genuine spiritual struggles of European humanity as such take the form of struggles between (...) the philosophies, that is, between the skeptical philosophies--or nonphilosophies, which retain the word but not the task--and the actual and still vital philosophies. But the vitality of the latter consists in the fact that they are struggling for their true and genuine meaning and thus for the meaning of a genuine humanity.". (shrink)

Que quelque chose de notre " nature humaine " se trouve étrangement éclairé par l'analyse phénoménologique des rapports complexes entre phantasia, imagination et affectivité, telle est l'énigme qui traverse ce livre comme un fil rouge. Autant la phénoménologie comme telle s'occupe des phénomènes en leur statut transcendantal, autant la précision qui leur est apportée par la prise en compte de leur dimension imaginative et affective, conduit-elle à délimiter, à l'intérieur de la phénoménologie, le champ de l'anthropologie phénoménologique. Et, à l'intérieur (...) de ce champ, les psychopathologies sont un véritable révélateur. Les analyses phénoménologiques qui en sont proposées ici conduisent à prendre la mesure, souvent démesurée, de l'homme, et à affiner en retour les structures que la phénoménologie dégage pour sa part. Analyses en zigzags ou en spirale qui permettent de voir et de décrire les rivages d'une terre, mais qui est une terra incognita : la nôtre. Voyage long, difficile, aventureux où l'énigme reste entière mais a changé de visage. Alors qu'il y a quelque chose de non humain dans la rationalité, et qui a tant séduit la tradition philosophique, dans le champ qui se découvre ici, l'imagination, dans ses rapports complexes avec l'affectivité, paraît, en écho à Nietzsche, humaine, trop humaine. Lieu d'illusions multiples, affectives, mais aussi axiologiques, au plus loin de toute idéologie et de toute évaluation, toutes deux ratiocinantes, au plus près d'une reprise lucide des horizons symboliques de l'institution symbolique dans laquelle nous vivons et qui nous fait vivre. This paper explores Husserl’s late manuscripts in order to sketch a phenomenological description of drives and the dimension of passive constitution that belongs to them. Although this topic touches upon psychological issues, it will be shown that a specifically phenomenological approach allows us to recognize the transcendental significance of instincts. By means of the phenomenological reduction, drives reveal a peculiar subject, the ‘original child’, which is described not as a figure of developmental psychology but as a transcendental subject pre-forming the (...) way the world appears to us. Drives work constantly and passively as obscure sources of sense, and the original child is always involved in the constitution of the world. Sharpening our understanding of the inner structure of subjectivity by digging into deeper constitutive levels has important consequences for our view of intersubjectivity: it is not only the individual subject’s consciousness but equally the relation between human subjects which is necessarily rooted in the dimension of drives. Accordingly, collective teleology cannot be considered a late product of human cooperation. Instead, it is an original and pre-predicative impulse. (shrink)

Restant fidA]le A l'attitude phA(c)nomA(c)nologique qui consiste A mettre hors circuit tout prA(c)supposA(c) mA(c)taphysique (qu'il soit de nature antisubjectiviste ou dogmatique), le prA(c)sent ouvrage met en A(c)vidence des motifs cherchant A mettre en place une phA(c)nomA(c)nologie de la connaissance et de la comprA(c)hension qui A(c)vite A la fois l'A(c)cueil d'un scepticisme radical et celui d'une philosophie (...) de la transcendance.
