  1. Docile Suffragettes? Resistance to Police Photography and the Possibility of Object–Subject Transformation.Linda Mulcahy - 2015 - Feminist Legal Studies 23 (1):79-99.
This paper provides a revisionist account of the authority and power of the criminal mugshot. Dominant theories in the field have tended to focus on the ways in which mugshots have been used as a way of disciplining criminal bodies and rendering them docile. It is argued here that additional emphasis could usefully be placed on stories of resistance in which the monological production site of the prison or police station transforms into a dialogical site, in which the objects of (...)

  • Making Different Differences: Representation and Rights in Sexuality Activism.Kay Lalor - 2015 - Feminist Legal Studies 23 (1):7-25.
This paper argues that current iterations of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex rights are limited by an overreliance on particular representations of sexuality, in which homosexuality is defined negatively through a binary of homosexual/heterosexual. The limits of these representations are explored in order to unpick the possibility of engaging in a form of sexuality politics that is grounded in difference rather than in sameness or opposition. The paper seeks to respond to Braidotti’s call for an “affirmative politics” that is (...)

  • Sex Work’s Governance: Stuff and Nuisance.Angela Campbell - 2015 - Feminist Legal Studies 23 (1):27-45.
Sex work’s governance throughout the Commonwealth has historically been animated by the objective of rendering the sale of sex, and those who engage in such transactions, invisible. To achieve this end, lawmakers have characterized public, viewable sex work as a nuisance meriting criminalization. Although prohibition results in unequivocal perils for sex workers, governance strategies in this domain remain centred on criminalization. A new law in Canada, Bill C-36: the Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act, exemplifies this point. While Bill (...)

  • ‘Like Gold Dust These Days’: Domestic Violence Fact-Finding Hearings in Child Contact Cases.Adrienne Barnett - 2015 - Feminist Legal Studies 23 (1):47-78.
Fact-finding hearings may be held to determine disputed allegations of domestic violence in child contact cases in England and Wales, and can play a vital role for mothers seeking protection and autonomy from violent fathers. Drawing on the author’s empirical study, this article examines the implications for the holding of fact-finding hearings of judges’ and professionals’ understandings of domestic violence and the extent to which they perceive it to be relevant to contact. While more judges and professionals are developing their (...)
