Descartes's Dioptrics is more than a mere technical treatise on optics; it is an essay in the "practical philosophy" that he claimed could render us "masters and possessors of nature." Descartes's practical intent is indicated first by the instrumentalist character of his derivation of the sine law of refraction, which is based on a heuristic and readily mathematizable model that requires no consideration of light's "true nature." Descartes's subsequent discussion of human vision is an extended critique of nature's workmanship that (...) grounds the possibility of improving vision by artificial means. I suggest that this critique is the source of Descartes's doctrine that the purpose of sensory perception is to preserve the mind-body composite, not to provide knowledge of the essential nature of things. Accordingly, the ultimate goal of the Dioptrics is to "master" human vision by raising it from a mere means of self-preservation to an instrument of scientific knowledge. -/- . (shrink)

I begin my discussion by considering how to relate Descartes’s more general concern with the conduct of life to the metaphysics and epistemology in the foreground of his philosophical project. I then turn to the texts in which Descartes offers his developed ethical thought and present the case for Descartes as a virtue ethicist. My argument emerges from seeing that Descartes’s conception of virtue and the good owes much to Stoic ethics, a school of thought which saw a significant revival (...) in the seventeenth century. It does, however, deviate from classical Stoicism in critical ways. Towards the end of my discussion, I return to the question of the relation between Descartes’s ethics and his metaphysics and epistemology, and I suggest that the Discourse on the Method for Rightly Conducting Reason and the Meditations on First Philosophy are invested with the virtue ethical considerations of moral education and the regulation of the passions, respectively. John Marshall aims, in Descartes’s Moral Theory, to “introduce Descartes’s moral thought to an anglophone audience”. He provides such an introduction not only in that he surveys Descartes’s writings on ethics from the Discourse, through his correspondence, to The Passions of the Soul, but also in that he presents a sustained argument for a reading of how these writings all fit together.

Covering both the history of mathematics and of philosophy, Descartes's Mathematical Thought reconstructs the intellectual career of Descartes most comprehensively and originally in a global perspective including the history of early modern China and Japan. Especially, it shows what the concept of "mathesis universalis" meant before and during the period of Descartes and how it influenced the young Descartes. In fact, it was the most fundamental mathematical discipline during the seventeenth century, and for Descartes a key notion which may have (...) led to his novel mathematics of algebraic analysis. Dans cet essai d'epistemologie philosophique, Nicolas Grimaldi a voulu proposer une lecture originale de la philosophie de Descartes dont il s'attache avant tout a reconstituer la genese. Cette methode, propre a manifester la continuite d'une pensee, a neanmoins conduit l'auteur a en decouvrir les points de rupture: la pensee de Descartes serait constituee selon trois ordres successifs, correspondant a des experiences differentes. L'ordre de la verite marque tout d'abord un pur rapport a l'esprit, trouvant son modele dans les mathematiques; mais (...) Descartes, bientot lasse des mathematiques qui n'ont pas de contenu exterieur a elles-memes, choisit de s'orienter vers l'ordre de l'utilite, qui vise a nous rendre maitres et possesseurs de la nature. Cette technologie du reel soumet cependant nos demarches a la vraisemblance, et non plus a la verite, et une telle scission engage Descartes a decouvrir alors un troisieme ordre, celui de la beatitude: en decouvrant en nous la ressemblance et la marque de Dieu, nous faisons l'experience de l'infini. Cette tripartition a permis de reamenager l'oeuvre sous trois rubriques: methode, sciences et morale, et de restaurer a la philosophie de Descartes son unite speculative. (shrink)

Descartes is often accused of having fragmented the human being into two independent substances, mind and body, with no clear strategy for explaining the apparent unity of human experience.
