  1. Wittgenstein and Phenomenology: A Comparative Study of the Later Wittgenstein, Husserl, Heidegger, and Merleau-Ponty.Nicholas F. Gier - 1981 - State University of New York Press.
In the first in-depth philosophical study of the subject, Nicholas Gier examines the published and unpublished writings of Ludwig Wittgenstein, to show the striking parallels between Wittgenstein and phenomenology. Between 1929 and 1933, the philosopher proposed programs that bore a detailed resemblance to dominant themes in the phenomenology of Husserl and some “life-world” phenomenologists. This sound, thoroughly readable study examines how and why he eventually moved away from it. Gier demonstrates, however, that Wittgenstein’s phenomenology continues as his “grammar” of the (...)

  • Knowledge by agreement: the programme of communitarian epistemology.Martin Kusch - 2002 - New York: Oxford University Press.
Martin Kusch puts forth two controversial ideas: that knowledge is a social status and that knowledge is primarily the possession of groups rather than individuals. He defends the radical implications of his views: that knowledge is political, and that it varies with communities. This bold approach to epistemology is a challenge to philosophy and the wider academic world.

  • Wittgenstein's doctrine of the tyranny of language.S. Morris Engel - 1971 - The Hague,: M. Nijhoff.
STEPHEN TOULMIN George Santayana used to insist that those who are ignorant of the history of thought are doomed to re-enact it. To this we can add a corollary: that those who are ignorant of the context of ideas are doom ed to misunderstand them. In a few self-contained fields such as pure mathematics, concepts and conceptual systems can perhaps be de tached from their historico-cultural situations; so that (for instance) a self-taught Ramanujan, living alone in India, mastered number theory (...)

This paper explores Wittgenstein’s account of the semantic differences between the two uses of 'I' in the Blue Book, arguing that, independently of the private language argument, it undermines substance dualism while demonstrating the philosophical misconceptions upon which it is based.

In this paper I examine Wittgenstein's private language argument and Ayer's counter argument. I argue that the language-game approach is of transcendental character in the sense that it concerns the logical structure of human activity, which underlies concrete linguistic practices as well as operations of consciousness. Failure in recognizing this results in much confusion. I demonstrate that the key issue concerning private language is not the problem of correctness of identification as commonly believed, but the social nature of individuation. I (...)
