This major study of Kant provides a detailed examination of the development and function of the doctrine of transcendental illusion in his theoretical philosophy. The author shows that a theory of 'illusion' plays a central role in Kant's arguments about metaphysical speculation and scientific theory. Indeed, she argues that we cannot understand Kant unless we take seriously his claim that the mind inevitably acts in accordance with ideas and principles that are 'illusory'. Die noch im "Anhang zur transzendentalen Dialektik" der Kritik der reinen Vernunft vorgenommene transzendentale Deduktion der Ideen - von Kant als "die Vollendung des kritischen Geschäftes der reinen Vernunft" (B 698) bezeichnet - wird als Reaktion gegen ein zuvor bedrohlich auftretendes Mannigfaltiges der Erfahrung interpretiert. Als Stärkung der totalisierenden Funktionen der Vernunft entspricht diese Maßnahme zwar der in der Kritik entwickelten Theorie der Erfahrung, gefährdet aber zugleich die Balance zwischen Mannigfaltigkeit und Einheit der Erfahrung. In einem alternativen, in der Kritik (...) der Urteilskraft enthaltenen Lösungsversuch setzt Kant an die Stelle einer Ausrichtung auf die Vernunftideen (Seele, Welt und Gott) die Orientierung am Prinzip der Zweckmäßigkeit. Wenngleich diese Teleologisierung der im "Anhang zur transzendentalen Dialektik" aufgetretenen Problematik gerechter wird, führt sie im Resultat nicht über ihn hinaus. (shrink)

Introduction Kant develops a positive though regulative role for reason toward the end of the Dialectic of the Critique of Pure Reason, particularly in the Appendix to the Dialectic. In the opening section, “The Regulative Employment of the Ideas of Pure Reason”, he provides us with an account of how these ideas can unify the understanding in its employment, although only regulatively. Part of this account includes a discussion of the hypothetical use of reason, in which one inspects a group (...) of particulars to see whether they fit a given universal and then generalizes over other future particulars that the universal will apply to them as well.
