It is suggested that if Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) is to fulfil its potential as an approach to cultural and historical science in general, then an interdisciplinary concept of activity is needed. Such a concept of activity would provide a common foundation for all the human sciences, underpinning concepts of, for example, state and social movement equally as, for example, learning and personality. For this is needed a clear conception of the ‘unit of analysis’ of activity, i.e., of what constitutes (...) ‘ an activity’, and a clear distinction between the unit of analysis and the substance , i.e., ultimate reality underlying all the human sciences: artifact-mediated joint activity. It is claimed that the concept of ‘project collaboration’ – the interaction between two or more persons in pursuit of a common objective – forms such a unit of activity, the single ‘molecule’ in terms of which both sociological and psychological phenomena can be theorised. It is suggested that such a clarification of the notion of activity allows us to see how individual actions and societal activities mutually constitute one another and are each construed in the light of the other. The article introduces the Vygotskian tradition in the realist theoretical discussion of the structure-agency problem. Archer's concept of internal conversation is discussed in terms of internalization and externalization of conversational dynamics. The article addresses in particular the methodological issue of observing how external events trigger internal use of language, and how these internal dynamics are externalized. The experience of talk is proposed as a conceptual key to the understanding of internal conversations and of the relation between structured activity and agency. (...) The experience of talk is defined with the help of the notions of emotional experience, personal sense and inner speech, as they are conceptualized in activity theory and in particular in the works of L.S. Vygotsky and A.N. Leont’ev. Students’ experiences of critical conversational events with teachers are analyzed on the basis of written autobiographical accounts. The experience of talk emerges from the analysis as a form of emotional experience in which the horizon of the individual's subjective view relates to specific circumstances external to the individual. Autobiographical accounts of critical conversations are suggested as a type of data which allows access to the experience of talk. (shrink)

This paper argues that the warning: mind the gap, is useful in allowing us to think about the nature of the agent, the nature of knowledge, and the nature of reality. To this objective, I bring attention to various gaps: the inherent gap of the agent, the gap between ontology and epistemology, and the gaps between the domains of the real, the actual, and the empirical. In order to shed light on the nature of the agent, I draw upon Žižek’s (...) reading of the inherent gap of the subject or agent as divided from within. Here, I utilize the notion of the fallacy of de-agentification to hypothesize what occurs when such gap is collapsed. In order to shed light on the nature of knowledge and reality, I draw upon the philosophy of critical realism to introduce the gap between ontology and epistemology and the gaps between the domains of the real, the actual, and the empirical, and the fallacies that result when these gaps are collapsed; namely, what in critical realists terms is known as the epistemic fallacy and the fallacy of actualism. Last, I draw upon Jameson’s model of interpretation in literary theory consisting of three interpretative horizons—the political horizon, the horizon of the deadlock, and the horizon of history—to bring attention via various examples from narratives and film to the perspective that sees that, unlike the application of these three horizons in literary texts, the ultimate universalizing horizon of history in reality, as the future, is open.
