  • Karl Marx: His Life and Thought.David McLellan - 1973 - [London] : Macmillan.
David McLellan's balanced and comprehensive biography presents to the English-speaking reader for the first time a full picture of Marx - in his private life, as a political activist and as a thinker. A full range of sources is drawn upon and the reader can follow the fascinating story of Marx's marriage and family life amid extraordinary privations, his activities in the Communist League and the First International, and the ful extent and subtlety of his thought as it developed.

In fact, it is a purely social one. Marx's theory of value is nothing but his theory of the social forms distinctive of the capitalist mode of production. Thus, we may speak of those forms as value-forms, the commodity, money, capital, wage-labour, surplus-value and its forms of appearance, and more. The labour (...)

Systematic dialectic is distinguished from historical dialectic and its logic explored. As a strategy of exposition designed to articulate the forms of a given whole it orders the relevant categories in a linear development. The dialectical justification of the transitions is the central question addressed. What is given progressively as the further determination of the abstract beginning should be read retrogressively as a grounding movement validating the earlier categories from the perspective of the concrete whole.
