  • The Abused Mind: Feminist Theory, Psychiatric Disability, and Trauma.Andrea Nicki - 2001 - Hypatia 16 (4):80-104.
I show how much psychiatric disability is informed by trauma, marginalization, sexist norms, social inequalities, concepts of irrationality and normalcy, oppositional mind-body dualism, and mainstream moral values. Drawing on feminist discussion of physical disability, I present a feminist theory of psychiatric disability that serves to liberate not only those who are psychiatrically disabled but also the mind and moral consciousness restricted in their ranges of rational possibilities.

  • The Voice on the Skin: Self-Mutilation and Merleau-Ponty's Theory of Language.Janice McLane - 1996 - Hypatia 11 (4):107-118.
Self-mutilation is generally seen only as a negative response to trauma. But when trauma cannot be expressed, other forms of communication become necessary. As gestural communication, self-mutilation can reorganize and stabilize the trauma victim's world, providing a "voice on the skin" when the actual voice is forbidden. This is a plausible extension of Merleau-Ponty's gestural theory of language, and an interesting comment on his notion of "reversibility" as essential to linguistic communication.

  • Misfits: A Feminist Materialist Disability Concept.Rosemarie Garland-Thomson - 2011 - Hypatia 26 (3):591-609.
This article offers the critical concept misfit in an effort to further think through the lived identity and experience of disability as it is situated in place and time. The idea of a misfit and the situation of misfitting that I offer here elaborate a materialist feminist understanding of disability by extending a consideration of how the particularities of embodiment interact with the environment in its broadest sense, to include both its spatial and temporal aspects. The interrelated dynamics of fitting (...)

  • Feminist, Queer, Crip.Alison Kafer - 2013 - Indiana University Press.
In Feminist, Queer, Crip Alison Kafer imagines a different future for disability and disabled bodies. Challenging the ways in which ideas about the future and time have been deployed in the service of compulsory able-bodiedness and able-mindedness, Kafer rejects the idea of disability as a pre-determined limit. She juxtaposes theories, movements, and identities such as environmental justice, reproductive justice, cyborg theory, transgender politics, and disability that are typically discussed in isolation and envisions new possibilities for crip futures and feminist/queer/crip alliances. • The Politics of Judgment: Aesthetics, Identity, and Political Theory.Kennan Ferguson - 1996 - Dissertation, University of Hawai'i
This project investigates how aesthetic judgment forms the groundwork for understanding political identities. I posit aesthetics as central to any conception of politics that is based on how people understand the relationship between themselves and political communities. I am interested not only in seeing how different abstract conceptions of political aesthetics contend against one another, but also how these contentions have historically developed and what they can potentially mean for contemporary disciplines within and throughout political science. The dissertation touches upon (...)

  • Leaky bodies and boundaries: feminism, postmodernism and (bio)ethics.Margrit Shildrick - 1997 - New York: Routledge.
Drawing on postmodernist analyses, Leaky Bodies and Boundaries presents a feminist investigation into the marginalization of women within western discourse that denies both female moral agency and bodylines. With reference to contemporary and historical issues in biomedicine, the book argues that the boundaries of both the subject and the body are no longer secure. The aim is both to valorize women and to suggest that "leakiness" may be the very ground for a postmodern feminist ethic. The contribution made by Margrit (...)

  • Building Bridges with Accessible Care: Disability Studies, Feminist Care Scholarship, and Beyond.Christine Kelly - 2013 - Hypatia 28 (4):784-800.
This article uses elements of autoethnography to theorize an in/formal support relationship between a friend with a physical disability, who uses attendant services, and me. Through thinking about our particular “frien-tendant” relationship, I find the common scholarly orientations toward “care” are inadequate. Starting from the conversations between feminist and disability perspectives on care, I build on previous work to further develop the theoretical framework of accessible care. Accessible care takes a critical, engaged approach that moves beyond understanding “accessibility” as merely (...)

  • Tranquil prisons: chemical incarceration under community treatment orders.Erick Fabris - 2011 - Buffalo, NY: University of Toronto Press.
Antipsychotic medications are sometimes imposed on psychiatric patients deemed dangerous to themselves and others. This is based on the assumption that treatment is safe and effective, and that recovery depends on biological adjustment. Under new laws, patients can be required to remain on these medications after leaving hospitals. However, survivors attest that forced treatment used as a restraint can feel like torture, while the consequences of withdrawal can also be severe.
