  • Gender, class, and social movement outcomes: Identity and effectiveness in two animal rights campaigns.Rachel L. Einwohner - 1999 - Gender and Society 13 (1):56-76.
    Animal rights organizations in the United States are predominantly female and middle class. What are the implications of the composition of these groups for animal rights activists' abilities to achieve their goals? In this article, the author examines the role of class and gender in the outcomes of an anti-hunting campaign and an anti-circus campaign waged by one animal rights organization in the Seattle area. The article shows that hunters make classed and gendered attributions about the activists, whereas circus patrons (...)

  • Race Discourses and Antiracist Practices in a Local Women's Movement.Anna M. Zajicek - 2002 - Gender and Society 16 (2):155-174.
    Increasingly, feminist scholars examine how the stability of racial hierarchies is maintained through discourse. This article explores the importance of race discourse in the construction of white women's accounts explaining their race politics. Specifically, the author examines the connections between race discourse and politics as they emerged in interviews with white women involved in a local women's movement between 1972 and 1999. The interviews revealed five discursive strategies women used to talk about race and the movement's antiracist practices. In addition, (...)

  • Women's Movements in the United States: Woman Suffrage, Equal Rights, and Beyond.Steven M. Buechler - 1990 - Rutgers University Press.
    Buecheler explains why women's movements arise, the forms of organization they adopt, the diversity of ideologies they espouse, and the class and racial composition of women's movements. He also helps us to understand the roots of countermovements, as well as the mixture of successes and failures that has characterized both past and present women's movements. While recognizing both the setbacks and the victories of the contemporary movement, Buecheler identifies grounds for relative optimism about the lasting consequences of this ongoing mobilization.

  • Ideological purity and feminism:: The U.s. Women's movement from 1966 to 1975.Barbara Ryan - 1989 - Gender and Society 3 (2):239-257.
    Through a reinterpretation of publications, interviews with long-term activists, and an analysis of change in the social environment, this article explains why feminist ideology failed to create unity among feminist women in the United States during the period 1966-1975, the years when contemporary feminism emerged. In spite of the desire to create a community of women to challenge the existing sociocultural structure, schisms within the movement often created divisive and antagonistic feminist group relations. In contrast to earlier research that attributed (...)

  • “Everything about us is feminist”: The significance of ideology in organizational change.Jan E. Thomas - 1999 - Gender and Society 13 (1):101-119.
    This study explores the role feminist ideology played in long-term structural changes in feminist organizations. The vehicle for this exploration was a comparative case study of 14 feminist women's health centers that were started in the 1970s and were still in existence in the early 1990s. Drawing on interviews and site visits, the author describes the early collectivist structures, highlights some of the crises these organizations faced, and describes three structural ideal types that emerged in the 1990s. The analysis suggests (...)
