  1. Deterministic Nonperiodic Flow.Edward Lorenz - 1963 - Journal of Atmospheric Sciences 20 (2):130-148.
Finite systems of deterministic ordinary nonlinear differential equations may be designed to represent forced dissipative hydrodynamic flow. Solutions of these equations can be identified with trajectories in phase space. For those systems with bounded solutions, it is found that nonperiodic solutions are ordinarily unstable with respect to small modifications, so that slightly differing initial states can evolve into considerably different states. Systems with bounded solutions are shown to possess bounded numerical solutions.A simple system representing cellular convection is solved numerically. All (...)

  • An Introduction to Autopoiesis - Implications and Applications.John Mingers - unknown
Maturana and Varela have developed a theory to explain the particular character of living systems. Such systems, they claim, have an autopoietic, or self-producing, organization. This term is now used widely, although often without a proper understanding of the detail of the theory. Moreover, the concept has been applied to other systems, such as societies and institutions, in a rather naïve manner. It is a very important theory, with far-reaching consequences both for science and for social intervention, but it must (...)
