  • Kant and Force: Dynamics, Natural Science and Transcendental Philosophy.Stephen Howard - 2017 - Dissertation, Kingston University
This thesis presents an interpretation of Immanuel Kant’s theoretical philosophy in which the notion of ‘force’ is of central importance. My analysis encompasses the full span of Kant’s theoretical and natural-scientific writings, from the first publication to the drafts of an unfinished final work. With a close focus on Kant’s texts, I explicate their explicit references to force, providing a narrative of the philosophical role and significance of force in the various periods of the Kantian oeuvre. This represents an intervention (...)

  • Kant on the Phenomenology of Touch and Vision.Gary Hatfield - 2014 - In Alix Cohen (ed.), Kant's Lectures on Anthropology: A Critical Guide. Cambridge, United Kingdom: Cambridge University Press. pp. 38–56.
This chapter deals with Immanuel Kant's remarks on touch and vision in the context of his pragmatic anthropology, by considering his views of the scope, aims, and methods of that fledgling discipline. Kant supports his discussion with appeals to observation and experience that form a kind of everyday phenomenology of sensory experience. The chapter considers Kant's notion of the relation between the pragmatic and the theoretical, including his remarks that a pragmatic anthropology does not present theoretical or scholastic knowledge but (...)

  • Kant and Whewell on Bridging Principles between Metaphysics and Science.Steffen Ducheyne - 2011 - Kant Studien 102 (1):22-45.
In this essay, I call attention to Kant’s and Whewell’s attempt to provide bridging principles between a priori principles and scientific laws. Part of Kant’s aim in the Opus postumum (ca. 1796-1803) was precisely to bridge the gap between the metaphysical foundations of natural science (on the Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science (1786) see section 1) and physics by establishing intermediary concepts or ‘Mittelbegriffe’ (henceforth this problem is referred to as ‘the bridging-problem’). I argue that the late-Kant attempted to show (...)

  • Does Kant's Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science fill a Gap in the Critique of Pure Reason?Kenneth R. Westphal - 1995 - Synthese 103 (1):43 - 86.
In 1792 and 1798 Kant noticed two basic problems with hisMetaphysical Foundations of Natural Science (MAdN) which opened a crucial gap in the Critical system as a whole. Why is theMAdN so important? I show that the Analogies of Experience form an integrated proof of transeunt causality. This is central to Kant's answer to Hume. This proof requires explicating the empirical concept of matter as the moveable in space, it requires the specifically metaphysical principle that every physical event has an (...)
