  1. The Necessity of Historicism.Frank Ankersmit - 2010 - Journal of the Philosophy of History 4 (2):226-240.
Rankean historicism is ordinarily seen nowadays as an outdated nineteenth century fashion and that we could not possibly tolerate in our modern intellectual homes. In opposition to this common wisdom I argue that historicism - i.e. the claim that the nature of a thing is to be found in is history - is no less true for all writing of history as it was in the days of Ranke. So Ranke was right, after all. I shall argue my untimely thesis (...)

  • Danto, history, and the tragedy of human existence.F. R. Ankersmit - 2003 - History and Theory 42 (3):291–304.
Philosophy of history is the Cinderella of contemporary philosophy. Philosophers rarely believe that the issues dealt with by philosophers of history are matters of any great theoretical interest or urgency. In their view philosophy of history rarely goes beyond the question of how results that have already been achieved elsewhere can or should be applied to the domain of historical writing. Moreover, contemporary philosophers of history have done desperately little to dispel the low opinion that their colleagues have of them. (...)

The ethics committee met and discussed the case with the surgeon. Just prior to this, the bioethics committee at a nearby medical center received a referral for a similar case. That committee had already undertaken a thorough review of the literature and the legal proceedings involved in the Seattle Ashley case. The medical center committee agreed to share their findings and deliberations with the children’s hospital committee and sent two representatives to present their information. In addition, members of the children’s (...)

Through one of their members, the ethics committee was fortunate to have access to a prominent Muslim scholar, Abdulaziz Sachedina, and asked for clarification regarding Islamic beliefs regarding eye removal.

  • Ankersmit and historical representation.John Zammito - 2005 - History and Theory 44 (2):155–181.
In Historical Representation Frank Ankersmit seeks a juste milieu between postmodern theory and historical practice. But he still insists that the meaning of a historical representation “is not found, but made in and by [the] text.” Thus “there will be nothing, outside the text itself, that can govern or check [the conceptualization].” Accordingly, “a representation itself cannot be interpreted as one large description. I would not hesitate to say that this—and nothing else—is the central problem in the philosophy of history.” (...)

  • Philosophy of History before Historicism.George H. Nadel - 1964 - History and Theory 3 (3):291-315.
Philosophy of history before the nineteenth century was based on the classical theory of history. That theory, in justifying the purpose of historical studies, maintained that history was a storehouse of good and bad examples; was of particular use in educating statesmen, since it provided them with vicarious experience; and was a more compelling moral guide than the abstractions of philosophy. The unquestioned authority of Polybius and other ancient historians, as well as. of the definitions of history by Pseudo-Dionysius and (...)
