Nicolai Hartmann contributed significantly to the revitalization of the discipline of ontology in the early twentieth century. Developing a systematic, post-Kantian critical ontology ‘this side’ of idealism and realism, he subverted the widespread impression that philosophy must either exhaust itself in foundationalist epistemology or engage in system-building metaphysical excess. This essay provides an introduction to Hartmann’s approach in light of the recent translation of his early essay ‘How is Critical Ontology Possible?’ ( 1923 ) In it Hartmann criticizes both the (...) pretensions of epistemology as well as the principal errors of classical ontology, and he proposes a series of correctives that lead to his development of a highly original and elaborate stratified categorial ontology. This introduction explains the most important errors of the ‘old’ ontology, his correctives to them, and further fleshes out these correctives with reference to his mature ontological work. (shrink)

Von den großen deutschsprachigen Philosophen der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts steht Nicolai Hartmann mit seinem erkenntnistheoretischen Realismus und seiner ontologischen Schichtenlehre dem Materialismus zweifellos am nächsten. Die vielleicht wichtigste Wirkung hat Hartmanns Philosophie auf Georg Lukács' Spätwerk "Zur Ontologie des gesellschaftlichen Seins" ausgeübt. Als Fortsetzung dieser marxistischen Hartmann-Rezeption hat Wolfgang Harich seine eigene Hartmann-Auseinandersetzung verstanden. Während er in dem Buch "Nicolai Hartmann. Leben, Werk, Wirkung" die Entwicklung von Leben und Denken Hartmanns darstellte, untersucht er in dem vorliegenden, in Dialogform (...) verfassten Werk die Stellung von Hartmanns Philosophie im Kontext der zeitgenössischen Strömungen des Neukantianismus, des kritischen Realismus (Külpe), der Phänomenologie und der Existenzphilosophie. Besonderes Augenmerk richtet er dabei auf Hartmanns Verhältnis zu Heidegger und Lukács. Das systematische Ziel Harichs besteht darin, die von Lukács begonnene "marxistische Selbstverständigung" über Hartmann fortzuführen und für die Weiterentwicklung des Marxismus auszuwerten. (shrink)

In this propaedeutic work, through Kant’s own texts, I will try to offer a balanced description and a succinct reconstruction of Kant’s arguments about the possibility and impossibility of Metaphysics. In the first place I will present some criticisms of Metaphysics, then I will visualize the Kantian notion of Metaphysics, as well as its constitutive reasons and moments; and finally, I will analyze what kind of knowledge is Metaphysics and the characteristics and nature of it, so that this «science» is (...) viable. In order to carry out this task, I will assume the hypothesis that Kant’s Metaphysics, in correspondence with the resolution of the third question of knowledge, is a science that integrates practical and theoretical reason into a universal system that seeks transcendence. If Metaphysics has any chance, this would probably be the way. (shrink)
