  11. Exploring Environmental Kuznets Curves of Kitakyushu: 50-Year Time-Series Data of the OECD SDGs Pilot City.Quan-Hoang Vuong, Ho Manh Tung, Nguyen To Hong Kong & Nguyen Minh Hoang - manuscript
Can green growth policies help protect the environment while keeping the industry growing and infrastructure expanding? The City of Kitakyushu, Japan, has actively implemented eco-friendly policies (...)since 1967 and recently inspired the pursuit of sustainable development around the world, especially in the Global South region. However, empirical studies on the effects of green growth policies are still lacking. This study explores the relationship between road infrastructure development and average industrial firm size with air pollution in the city through the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis. Auto-Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) and Non-linear Auto-Regressive Distributed Lag (NARDL) methods were applied on nearly 50-yearstime series data, from 1967 to 2015. The results show that the shape of the EKC of industrial growth, measured by average firm size, depends on the type of air pollution: inverted N-shaped relationships with NO2 and CO, and the U-shaped relationships with falling dust particle and Ox. Regarding infrastructure development, on the one hand, our analysis shows a positive effect of road construction on alleviating the amount of falling dust and CO concentration. On the other hand, the emissions of NO2 and Ox are shown to rise when plotted against road construction. The decline of CO emission, when plotted against both industrial growth and road development, indicates that the ruthlessness of the local government in pursuing green growth policies is effective in this case. However, the story is not straightforward when it comes to other air pollutants, which hint at limits in the current policies. The case of Kitakyushu illustrates the complex dynamics of the interaction among policy, industry, infrastructure, and air pollution. It can serve as an important reference point for other cities in the Global South when policies are formed, and progress is measured in the pursuit of a green economy. Finally, as an OECD SDGs pilot city and the leading Asian green-growth city, policymakers in Kitakyushu city are recommended to revise the data policy to enhance the findability and interoperability of data as well as to invest in the application of big data. ProclusDoctrine of Participation in Maximus the Confessors Centuries of Theology I.4850.Jonathan Greig - 2017 - Studia Patristica 75:137-148.
In the Centuries of Theology I.4850, Maximus states that there are two kinds of works that belong to God: one which corresponds to beings having a (...) temporal, finite beginning, and one which corresponds to perfections of beings which have no beginning and are therefore eternal. Maximus labels the latter as participated beings (ὄντα μεθεκτά) and the former as participating beings (ὄντα μετέχοντα), with God transcending both as their cause. The structure of God-as-cause, participated beings, and participating beings matches Proclusthree-fold structure of participation with the ontological categories of unparticipated, participated, and participating. While Maximus borrows the basic language and structure from Proclus, he makes certain minor but significant differences, particularly in how the participated beings both relate to their source in God and in their status of existence. This paper thus sets out to analyze I.4850 in the general context of the Centuries of Theology, considering how Maximus conceives of the ontological distinctions between God and Gods works. A comparison with Proclusunderstanding of participation follows, particularly from ProclusElements of Theology Prop. 23, which succinctly states the three-term distinction of participation. The resulting comparison shows that Proclusframework of participation is flattened for Maximus, where the participated works represent multiple properties distinct in kind from the unparticipated, while God fits analogously in the status of the unparticipated. The underlying ontology supports Maximusimplicit denial that such participated entities represent distinct divinities, as they do for Proclus, while Maximusassertion of Gods transcendence is still secured with the ontological distinction between the participated works and their unparticipated cause. A half-century of Rawls interpreters have overemphasized economic equality in A Theory of Justice, slighting libertythe central value of liberalismin the process. From luck-egalitarian (...)readings of Rawls to more recent claims that Rawls was areticent socialist,” these interpretations have obscured Rawlss identity as a philosopher of freedom. They have also obscured the perhaps surprising fact that Rawlsian liberties (basic and non-basic) restrain and even undermine that same economic equality. As I will show in this article, such undermining occurs in three areas: first, in the lexical priority of the basic liberties; second, in the (underappreciated) role played by free and competitive markets in Rawlss theory; and third, in the structure and functioning of Rawlss preferred economic institutions, viz., liberal socialism and property-owning democracy. More than 50 years after the publication of Thomas Kuhns seminal book, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, this volume assesses the adequacy of the Kuhnian model (...)in explaining certain aspects of science, particularly the social and epistemic aspects of science. One argument put forward is that there are no good reasons to accept Kuhns incommensurability thesis, according to which scientific revolutions involve the replacement of theories with conceptually incompatible ones. Perhaps, therefore, it is time for anotherdecisive transformation in the image of science by which we are now possessed.” Only this time, the image of science that needs to be transformed is the Kuhnian one. Does the Kuhnian image of science provide an adequate model of scientific practice? If we abandon the Kuhnian picture of revolutionary change and incommensurability, what consequences would follow from that vis-à-vis our understanding of scientific knowledge as a social endeavour? -/- The essays in this collection continue this debate, offering a critical examination of the arguments for and against the Kuhnian image of science as well as their implications for our understanding of science as a social and epistemic enterprise. 49. Testimonial Knowledge-How.Andrew Peet - 2019 - Erkenntnis 84 (4):895-912.
There is an emerging skepticism about the existence of testimonial knowledge-how :387404, 2010; Poston in Noûs 50:865878, 2016; Carter and Pritchard in Philos Phenomenol (...)Res 91:181199, 2015a). This is unsurprising since a number of influential approaches to knowledge-how struggle to accommodate testimonial knowledge-how. Nonetheless, this scepticism is misguided. This paper establishes that there are cases of easy testimonial knowledge-how. It is structured as follows: first, a case is presented in which an agent acquires knowledge-how simply by accepting a speakers testimony. Second, it is argued that this knowledge-how is genuinely testimonial. Next, Postons arguments against easy testimonial knowledge-how are considered and rejected. The implications of the argument differ for intellectualists and anti-intellectualists about knowledge-how. The intellectualist must reject widespread assumptions about the communicative preconditions for the acquisition of testimonial knowledge. The anti-intellectualist must find a way of accommodating the dependence of knowledge-how on speaker reliability. It is not clear how this can be done. (shrink)
