This reflection on the Petrine Ministry is being made freely available to students during this ongoing pandemic of COVID 19. This very brief essay seeks to understand the meaning of the title of the eponymous novel by Graham Greene.

Even before he assumed the Petrine office as head of the Catholic Church, Joseph Ratzinger already carries the reputation of being one of the most important figures, not only of the Catholic intellectual tradition, but more so of the theological enterprise of the twentieth century. A closer appreciation of his thought which delves into the relevant discussions of the time, such as those that tackle pluralism and relativism, further reveals that more than a theologian, Ratzinger is a ‘thinker’ capable (...) of dialoguing with intellectuals of any background. This noncompromising openness to the ideas that challenge his own gives credence to the range and depth of the beliefs that he holds and proclaims to the world. This paper presents Ratzinger’s insights that elicit a philosophical analysis based on the themes that concern the relevance of belief – the Christian faith – to the theoretical and practical movements of the contemporary period. The theology of the St. John’s Letters forms a kind of synthesis of the Pauline and Petrine elements, so that the earthly and prophetic-heavenly tradition and the contemplative vision unite at the same point. Although it does not have all the elements of a classical epistle, 1 John has all the details of a pastoral letter, rather in a contemporary sense. The document as a whole presents the fluidity of a homily, an “Epistle-essay”, which, however, addresses issues specific to (...) its readers. On the other hand, 2 John and 3 John are writings that fall into the epistolary genre of the Hellenistic period, with a strong personal character, being extremely short (13 and 15 verses), even the smallest literary productions within the New Testament canon. If the first Epistle was written in order to defend the authentic interpretation of the Johannine tradition, with a substantial theological argument, the last two letters address an ecclesial issue, resorting to formal and institutional arguments. The commentary is a detailed analysis of the "spiritual testament" of St. Peter the Apostle, a didactic writing that has very close links with both the first Petrine Epistle, as well as the Epistle of St. Jude. The theology of this New Testament book is outlined especially around the Christological, Soteriological and Eschatological ideas, developed through the frequent exhortations addressed to the Christian readers. No other part of the New Testament states so clearly the Inspiration of the Holy Scripture (...) (1:20-21). Also, here we can find the first mention of an already existing collection of Pauline correspondence, seen as an integral part of the Scriptural Canon (cf. 3:15-16). Finally, in addition to its Christological-Soteriological teaching, which can be summarized in the unique expression "partakers of the divine nature" (1:4), the Epistle addresses one of the fundamental themes of New Testament literature: The Parousia (the Second Coming of the Lord). Thus, the present Commentary covers an existing gap in the specialized theological literature and is among the newer concerns of biblical scholars, paying attention to the enhancement of the corpus of the Catholic Epistles. The volume is divided into four essential parts, as announced in the subtitle of the writing: an Isagogical Part that reaches the main points related to the authorship, authority, structure and dating of the writing, the actual Translation of the Petrine text (highlighted by the bilingual column that also includes the standard Greek text), a more consistent part embodied in a very elaborate Commentary on the text itself (verse by verse, we could even say word for word), constantly related to the Greek original and also a final part that emphasizes the main Theological Themes of the letter (Triadology, Eschatology Angelology, Soteriology, the Inspiration of the Holy Scripture, etc.).
