In this paper, I compare the Megarian thesis of Metaphysics IX 3 with other sources on the Megarians in order to clarify two questions: that of the unity and nature of the so-called Megarian school and that of Aristotle’s broader argument in IX 3. I first review the disputed issue of the status of the Megarian school and then examine two hypotheses regarding the identity behind Aristotle’s allusion in IX 3. Third, I explore the connection between Megarianism and Plato’s Euthydemus, (...) a task that helps us to contextualize Aristotle’s anti-Megarian polemic. Lastly, I build on the preceding argument in a re-examination of the Eleatic hypothesis with regard both to the Megarians as a whole and to the thesis that Aristotle transmits. (shrink)

Okeanos is at once a mythological figure and a philosophical concept appearing in many ancient accounts of the world. A frequent object of allegoresis, his cosmological role and his name posed an enigma to Homer’s readers, especially those with a rationalizing bent. This paper proposes that the paradoxical representation of Okeanos as a primordial generative power and a geographical limit may be explained by the influence of etymological speculation, which was a popular heuristic method used by Greek intellectuals from the (...) archaic period throughout antiquity. Special volume of "Thaumàzein - Rivista di Filosofia" dedicated to the theme of Socratic Eudaimonia and care for others. It is a multilingual volume comprising twenty papers divided into six sections with an introduction by Linda Napolitano. Edited by Santiago Chame, Donald Morrison, and Linda Napolitano. -/- Despite the appearances given by certain texts, the moral psychology of Socrates needs not imply selfishness. On the contrary, a close look at passages in Plato and Xenophon (see Plato, Meno 77-78; Protagoras 358; (...) Gorgias 466-468; Euthydemus 278; Lysis 219; Xenophon, Memorabilia III 9, 4-5) suggests that the “egoist”’s welfare depends upon the welfare of others (i.e. family, friends or the whole city). Since the welfare of his family, friends and city is part of his own eudaimonìa, the “egoist” (phìlautos) has a direct and intrinsic motive to promote the welfare of these others. -/- This multilingual issue explores the role that other peoples’ welfare plays in Socratic ethics. Special attention is paid to test-cases in which the principle that moral action is always good only for the agent seems to have no validity. I.e., under which circumstances is the self-sacrifice for the sake of others (such as the soldier’s self-sacrifice on the battlefield) good for the agent (as in Alcibiades I 115a-116d)? Essays deal with contradictions or tensions of this sort, and relate them to more general views on eudaimonìa held within Socratic literature. Comparison between different Socratic authors is used as a means to identify the distinctive features of Socratic eudaimonìa if compared to other Greek theories of happiness, such as the Aristotelian theory of philautìa (NE IX, 1166a-1166b; 1168a-1169b). Στο βιβλίο “εισαγωγή στην κατανοητική φιλοσοφία - η περιπέτεια της ανθρώπινης χειραφέτησης” ιχνηλατούμε τη μακρυτενή πορεία του Λόγου προς την αυτογνωσία του και παρουσιάζουμε συνοπτικά τα ρεύματα και τα υπο-ρεύματα της φιλοσοφικής, κοινωνιολογικής και ψυχολογικής σκέψης που συνέβαλαν αποφασιστικά στη χειραφέτηση της Διάνοιας-Νόησης, δηλαδή του Λόγου και της Γνώσης, από το μυστικισμό, το σκοταδισμό, τις προλήψεις και τις προκαταλήψεις που νοηματοδοτούσαν την εμπειρία της κοινωνικής πρακτικής σ’ όλες τις ιστορικές εποχές του Δυτικού Πολιτισμού... Παράλληλα, όμως, διαπιστώνουμε ότι από τις απαρχές (...) της φιλοσοφικής προβληματικής του Λόγου και σ’ όλη τη μακραίωνη περιπέτειά του και παρά τις πολλαπλές εκφάνσεις του και τις νοηματικές μετουσιώσεις που προσέλαβε στα εκάστοτε κοινωνικά συστήματα που γνώρισε η ανθρωπότητα, εντούτοις ένα δομικό στοιχείο διατηρείται ίδιο και αδιαφοροποίητο στον λογικό πυρήνα του Λόγου: ο αυτο-αναφορικός και αυτο-νοηματοδοτικός χαρακτήρας του όλου ορθολογιστικού εγχειρήματος αποτελεί την εγγενή Ιδεολογική του επένδυση με την οποία ταυτίστηκε ιστορικά η φιλοσοφική σκέψη. Ο αυτό-αναφορικός χαρακτήρας του Λόγου χαρακτηρίζεται από την απολυτοποίηση της αξιακής χρήσης του “ορθού λόγου”, την παραγωγή αφαιρετικής ανθρωποκεντρικής υπεραξίας, η οποία οδηγεί στις μεταφυσικές διαιρέσεις και διακρίσεις και το θετικισμό που πάντοτε ελλόχευαν στον λογικό πυρήνα του Ορθολογικού τρόπου σκέψης και που βέβαια οδήγησε στη θλιβερή μετεξέλιξή του σ’ έναν άκρατο επιστημονισμό-θετικισμό στους νεότερους χρόνους. Βέβαια στη μακραίωνη ιστορία της φιλοσοφικής σκέψης υπήρξαν ρεύματα σκέψης και ρωμαλέες φωνές, που επιχείρησαν να “ανοίξουν” τον ορίζοντα του στοχασμού, πέραν από το αυτο-οριζόμενο Υποκείμενο και τις Ιδεολογικές του ταυτίσεις. Η σύγχρονη σκέψη διευρύνει περαιτέρω τον ορίζοντα της ανθρώπινης κατανόησης και μας καλεί: Πέραν του ανθρώπου, μαζί με τον άνθρωπο....... στον Κόσμο. Ο μετέωρος άνθρωπος ως κοσμικό απόσπασμα..... Στη πρώτη έκδοση του βιβλίου (1996) παρουσιάσαμε την ιστορία της Δυτικής φιλοσοφικής, κοινωνιολογικής και ψυχολογικής σκέψης και τις περιπέτειες του Λόγου, από την ανατολή του, την αρχαία Ελλάδα μέχρι και τη δύση του, τον ανθρωπιστικό Διαφωτισμό των Νεότερων Χρόνων. Στην προσθήκη της δεύτερης έκδοσης (2011) συμπεριλάβαμε τις εξελίξεις στη σύγχρονη κοσμολογική, γνωσιοθεωρητική και κοινωνική-θεωρητική σκέψη. Έτσι η κατανοητική φιλοσοφία, ως εγχειρηματική σκέψη και εμπειρία, διερευνώντας και αφομοιώνοντας την πρότερη γόνιμη ιστορία της κλασικής φιλοσοφικής σκέψης, την μεταμορφώνει δημιουργικά και διευρύνει την προβληματική του στοχασμού της. L'article se propose de revisiter le thème de la déification chez Origène à la lumière de plusieurs perspectives: lexique, références scripturaires, aspects exégétiques et théologiques. La doctrine origénienne se manifeste sous plusieurs facettes. La déification s'articule a l'intérieur d'un discours biblique et sotériologique. La divinisation de l'homme, engageant aussi son corps selon le modèle archétypique de Christ ressucité, débouche finalement sur l'immortalité et l'incorruption retrouvées autant que sur la pleine acquisition de la condition de fils adoptifs de Dieu.

There are many ontologies of the world or of specific phenomena such as time, matter, space, and quantum mechanics1. However, ontologies of information are rather rare. One of the reasons behind this is that information is most frequently associated with communication and computing, and not with ‘the furniture of the world’. But what would be the nature of an ontology of information? For it to be of significant import it should be amenable to formalization in a logico-grammatical formalism. A candidate (...) ontology satisfying such a requirement can be found in some of the ideas of K. Turek, presented in this paper. Turek outlines the ontology of information conceived of as a part of nature, and provides the ‘missing link’ to the Z axiomatic set theory, offering a proposal for developing a formal ontology of information both in its philosophical and logicogrammatical representations.
