  1. The State of the Question in the Study of Plato: Twenty Year Update.Gerald A. Press - 2018 - Southern Journal of Philosophy 56 (1):9-35.
This article updates “The State of the Question in the Study of Plato” (Southern Journal of Philosophy, 1996) based on research covering the years from 1995–2015. Its three major parts examine: (1) how the mid‐twentieth‐century consensus has fared, (2) whether the new trends identified in that article have continued, and (3) identify trends either new or missed in the original article. On the whole, it shows the continuing decline of dogmatic and nondramatic Plato interpretation and the expansion and ramification of (...)

  • Imagination in the metaphysical and mystical tradition: from Plato to Marsilio Ficino.

What role, if any, does dialectic play in Aristotle’s epistemology in the Topics? In this paper I argue that it does play a role, but a role that is independent of endoxa. In the first section, I sketch the case for thinking that dialectic plays a distinctively epistemological role—not just a methodological role, or a merely instrumental role in getting episteme. In the second section, I consider three ways it could play that role, on two of which endoxa play at (...)

At the beginning of (...)

  • Eleaticism and Socratic Dialectic: On Ontology, Philosophical Inquiry, and Estimations of Worth in Plato’s Parmenides, Sophist and Statesman.Jens Kristian Larsen - 2019 - Études Platoniciennes 19 (19).
The Parmenides poses the question for what entities there are Forms, and the criticism of Forms it contains is commonly supposed to document an ontological reorientation in Plato. According to this reading, Forms no longer express the excellence of a given entity and a Socratic, ethical perspective on life, but come to resemble concepts, or what concepts designate, and are meant to explain nature as a whole. Plato’s conception of dialectic, it is further suggested, consequently changes into a value-neutral method (...)

  • Apariencia e imagen: Examen a partir de algunos diálogos platónicos.Carolina Delgado - 2016 - Estudios de Filosofía (Universidad de Antioquia) 54:131-149.
The aim of the present paper is to determine the Platonic treatment of image. For this purpose, the most relevant sections of four dialogues Republic, Sophist, Cratyilus and Phaedo are analyzed. Textual examination has contributed to detect a distinction that operates in Platonic treatment, namely the difference between 'appearance' and 'image'. While the former is an ontologically loss-making illusion, the latter assumes the role of sensible instantiation of the ideal-intelligible realities. Based on this second kind, Plato has conceived the possibility (...)
