  1. “The First Man Speaking”: Merleau-Ponty on Expression as the Task of Phenomenology.Anna Petronella Foultier - 2015 - Journal of the British Society for Phenomenology 46 (3):195-212.
This article aims to establish an understanding of Merleau-Ponty’s view of creative expression, and of its phenomenological function, setting out from the intriguing statement in his essay “Cézanne’s Doubt” that the painter (or writer or philosopher) finds himself in the situation of the first human being trying to express herself. Although the importance of primary or creative expression in Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy is well known, there is no consensus among commentators with respect to how this notion is to be understood, and (...)

  • Reversibility and chiasm: false equivalents? An alternative approach to understanding difference in Merleau-Ponty’s late philosophy.Fiona Hughes - 2017 - British Journal for the History of Philosophy 25 (2):356-379.
The chiasm is usually considered the key notion for Merleau-Ponty’s later philosophy. I argue against a common conclusion, namely that ‘the chiasm’ is equivalent to ‘reversibility’. Even when the two terms are not taken as interchangeable, the precise nature of their relation has not been adequately established. Focusing exclusively on ‘reversibility’ has implications for a range of philosophical issues, including relations between self and other. The danger of substituting one term for the other is that existential relations are construed as (...)

  • (1 other version)Merleau-Ponty’s ‘sensible ideas’ and embodied-embedded practice.Andrew Inkpin - 2023 - Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences 22 (2):501-524.
In _The Visible and the Invisible_ Merleau-Ponty develops a notion of ‘sensible ideas’ that conceives general meaning as inseparable from its realization in sensible particulars. Such ideas – exemplified by music – are to capture the specificity of the meaning produced by embodied agency and serve as the foundation of all cognition. This article argues that, although Merleau-Ponty overgeneralizes their application, sensible ideas are philosophically important in enabling better understanding of the diverse forms and functions embodied-embedded practices and cognition can (...)

  • Anonymity and personhood: Merleau-Ponty’s account of the subject of perception.Sara Heinämaa - 2015 - Continental Philosophy Review 48 (2):123-142.
Several commentators have argued that with his concept of anonymity Merleau-Ponty breaks away from classical Husserlian phenomenology that is methodologically tied to the first person perspective. Many contemporary commentators see Merleau-Ponty’s discourse on anonymity as a break away from Husserl’s framework that is seen as hopelessly subjectivistic and solipsistic. Some judge and reproach it as a disastrous misunderstanding that leads to a confusion of philosophical and empirical concerns. Both parties agree that Merleau-Ponty’s concepts of anonymity mark a divergence from classical (...)

In (...)

  • A miopia da dióptrica.José Marcelo Siviero - 2020 - Cadernos Espinosanos 43.
This paper analyzes, from the opposition of the Cartesian notion of the mechanics of light and the idea of vision as distance possession developed by Merleau-Ponty, the criticism of philosophical modernity and its general paradigms of the centrality of reason. It is, strictly speaking, two distinct conceptions of sensitivity: one associated with mechanics, the other with existence. According to Merleau-Ponty, light as a movement of particles and corpuscles does not account for vision as the subject's installation in a mundane situation. (...)

  • Fenomenologia da linguagem e intersubjetividade em Merleau-Ponty/Phenomenology of Language and Intersubjectivity in Merleau-Ponty.Rodrigo Alvarenga - 2014 - Natureza Humana 16 (1).

  • Primacy of perception and other characteristic features from Merleau-Ponty ’s theory of knowledge.

  • Maurice Merleau-Pontyn lihan ontologiasta.Milla Rantala - 2019 - Ajatus 76 (1):169-189.
Merleau-Pontyn fenomenologiassa lihan ontologinen ulottuvuus mahdollistaa elettyjen (...)
