  • Where Merleau-Ponty Meets Dewey: Habit, Embodiment, and Education.Malcolm Thorburn & Steven A. Stolz - 2023 - Studies in Philosophy and Education 42 (6):599-615.
This paper utilises selective writings by John Dewey and Maurice Merleau-Ponty as the conceptual basis for considering how an enhanced synergistic focus on habit and embodiment could support practice gains in schools. The paper focuses on Dewey’s belief that established habits can help students to incorporate experiences into evaluations of educational progress and Merleau-Ponty’s spotlight on the body-subject, and how it provides a holistic way of conceiving relations that avoid over privileging abstraction and cognition and under-representing the centrality of the (...)

  • Clothing and the Discovery of Science.Ian Gilligan - 2024 - Foundations of Science 29 (3):645-674.
In addition to natural curiosity, science is characterized by a number of psychological processes and perceptions. Among the psychological features, scientific enquiry relates to uncovering—or discovering—aspects of a world perceived as hidden from humans. A speculative theoretical model is presented, suggesting the evolution of science reflects psychological repercussions of wearing clothes. Specifically, the natural world is perceived as hidden due to the presence of clothing. Three components of scientific enquiry may arise from clothing: detachment from sensual experience, a perception that (...)

  • Unshared Minds, Decaying Worlds: Towards a Pathology of Chronic Loneliness.Ian Marcus Corbin & Amar Dhand - 2024 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 49 (4):354-366.
The moment when a person’s actual relationships fall short of desired relationships is commonly identified as the etiological moment of chronic loneliness, which can lead to physical and psychological effects like depression, worse recovery from illness and increased mortality. But, this etiology fails to explain the nature and severe impact of loneliness. Here, we use philosophical analysis and neuroscience to show that human beings develop and maintain our world-picture (our sense of what is true, important, and good) through joint attention (...)

  • The 4E approach to the human microbiome: Nested interactions between the gut‐brain/body system within natural and built environments.Ismael Palacios-García, Gwynne A. Mhuireach, Aitana Grasso-Cladera, John F. Cryan & Francisco J. Parada - 2022 - Bioessays 44 (6):2100249.
The complexity of the human mind and its interaction with the environment is one of the main epistemological debates throughout history. Recent ideas, framed as the 4E perspective to cognition, highlight that human experience depends causally on both cerebral and extracranial processes, but also is embedded in a particular sociomaterial context and is a product of historical accumulation of trajectory changes throughout life. Accordingly, the human microbiome is one of the most intriguing actors modulating brain function and physiology. Here, we (...)

  • Poznanie rozproszone. Potencjał koncepcji a kondycja kognitywistyki.Witold Wachowski - 2024 - Studia Philosophiae Christianae 60 (1):15-41.
Artykuł ten ma celu zaakcentowanie i uzupełnienie wybranych wątków książki Witolda Wachowskiego Poznanie rozproszone. Od heurystyk do mechanizmów (2022). W tekście uwzględniono aktualną sytuację, w jakiej znajdują się nauki poznawcze, z perspektywy koncepcji poznania rozproszonego i związanych z nią badań.
