  1. Philosophy Meets the Social Sciences: The Nature of Humanity in the Public Arena.Lee Wilkins & Clifford Christians - 2001 - Journal of Mass Media Ethics 16 (2-3):99-120.
Using a base of philosophical athropology, this article suggests that an ethical analysis of persuasion must include not just the logic human response, but culture and experience as well. The authors propose potential maxims for ethical behavior in advertising and public relations and applies them to two case studies, political advertising and the Bridgestone/Firestone controversy.

  • B. F. Skinner's Other Positivistic Book: "Walden Two".Roy A. Moxley - 2006 - Behavior and Philosophy 34:19 - 37.
    B. F. Skinner's "The Behavior of Organisms" (1938/1966) and "Walden Two" (1948) are both positivistic. Skinner explicitly stated his approach was positivistic in "The Behavior of Organisms" although he did not make an explicit statement about "Walden Two". Three features of positivism are elaborated—its concern with indisputable certitude, unified reality, and ever-onward progress, each of which entailed overly simplifying assumptions. These features are brought out in the positivistic sources for "Walden Two" and in the changes from the positivistic views of (...)

  • The primacy of ontology: a philosophical basis for research on religion in prison.Lamia Irfan, Muzammil Quraishi, Mallory Schneuwly Purdie & Matthew Wilkinson - 2022 - Journal of Critical Realism 21 (2):145-169.
This paper suggests philosophical foundations for mixed methods research based on the philosophy of critical realism. In particular, it suggests that the critical realist idea of the primacy of ontology helps bridge the apparent paradigmatic gap between qualitative and quantitative research. It illustrates this foundational idea by showing why and how a multi-disciplinary team used a mixed methods approach to understand the significance of religion in prison through a multi-site study of religious conversion to Islam in prison and how this (...)

  • Rethinking Marxist approaches to transition: A theory of temporal dislocation.Ilhan Onur Acaroglu - 2020 - Dissertation, University of Birmingham
This dissertation seeks to reactivate the Marxist transition debate, by conceptualising transition as a problem in its own right, moving away from a stagist vision of the development of modes of production. Part I outlines the historical materialist parameters of the ontology of transition, and traces the concept across classical and western Marxism. This section draws from Althusserian theory to sketch out a conception of historical time as a multiplicity of dislocated trajectories. This is followed by a critique of post-Marxism, (...)

  • The Psychological Motivations to Social Innovation and Transmitting Role of Social Worth.Mei-Lan Lin, Tai-Kuei Yu & Andi Muhammad Sadat - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Social innovation has a great chance to overcome problems in complex environments. Individuals’ concern for environmental, social, and ethical issues has gradually grown, prompting the rise of new types of consumers, who shift their environmental concerns into action. Social entrepreneurship participants mostly act as beneficiaries and initiators in the process of social innovation. Social exchange theory explains the linkage between individual psychological factors and personal social cognitive perceptions that inspire social innovation intention. The current research framework is constructed to inspect (...)

  • Science, Sensibility and Gender in Argentina, 1820–1852.Adriana Novoa - 2020 - Perspectives on Science 28 (2):318-340.
This article analyzes how scientific thinking evolved in Argentina during the 1820s and 1830s. I will focus on liberals’ association of science with the emergence of a new male sensibility that feminized the role of men in society. This gendered scientific culture explains how liberals clashed in the 1830s with the policies of the governor of Buenos Aires, Juan Manuel de Rosas, whose hyper masculinist model based on the authority of the father was perceived not only as anti-civilization, but also (...)
