  1. How is emotional resonance achieved in storytellings of sadness/distress?Christoph Rühlemann - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13:952119.
Storytelling pivots around stance seen as a window unto emotion: storytellers project a stance expressing their emotion toward the events and recipients preferably mirror that stance by affiliating with the storyteller’s stance. Whether the recipient’s affiliative stance is at the same time expressive of his/her emotional resonance with the storyteller and of emotional contagion is a question that has recently attracted intriguing research in Physiological Interaction Research. Connecting to this line of inquiry, this paper concerns itself with storytellings of sadness/distress. (...)

  • Targeting emotional impact in storytelling: Working with client affect in emotion-focused psychotherapy.Lynne Angus, Naomi K. Knight & Peter Muntigl - 2014 - Discourse Studies 16 (6):753-775.
Within emotion-focused therapy, the client’s ability to express and reflect on core emotional experiences is seen as fundamental to constructing the self and to entering into a change process. For this study, we 1) examine storytelling contexts in which clients do not disclose the emotional impact of their narrative, and 2) identify the interactional practices through which EFT therapists subsequently call attention to what the client may have felt. In doing so, we examine client stories drawn from video-taped individual psychotherapy (...)

  • Prescribing conduct: Enactments of talk or thought in advice-giving sequences.Erica Sandlund - 2014 - Discourse Studies 16 (5):645-666.
In everyday interaction, people recurrently animate, enact, or report on talk or thought. In this article, enactments of hypothetical, non-narrative talk in advice-relevant sequences are examined, with a focus on their role in modeling desirable stance or conduct. Data consist of interactions in institutional settings, such as performance appraisal interviews, university teaching, and talk show counseling. It is demonstrated how enactments of possible talk are used as devices for hands-on demonstrations of proper or improper conduct in sequences involving orientations to (...)

  • On affiliation and alignment: Non-cooperative uses of anticipatory completions in the context of tellings.Anna Vatanen, Trine Heinemann & Marja Etelämäki - 2021 - Discourse Studies 23 (6):726-758.
In this paper, we address the larger notion of cooperation in interaction and its underlying dimensions as defined in Conversation Analysis: alignment and affiliation. Focusing on three cases from three different languages we investigate a specific practice, that of anticipatory completions, in a particular context, that of storytelling, and show that the practice of completing another speaker’s turn in an anticipatory manner is not de facto definable as either an aligning or non-aligning action, nor can it be said to be (...)
