  1. Following Affirmative and Negated Rules.Robert Wirth, Wilfried Kunde & Roland Pfister - 2023 - Cognitive Science 47 (11):e13378.
Rules are often stated in a negated manner (“no trespassing”) rather than in an affirmative manner (“stay in your lane”). Here, we build on classic research on negation processing and, using a finger‐tracking design on a touchscreen, we show that following negated rather than affirmative rules is harder as indicated by multiple performance measures. Moreover, our results indicate that practice has a surprisingly limited effect on negated rules, which are implemented more quickly with training, but this effect comes at the (...)

  • On comprehending adjectival antonyms and negation.Ramin Golshaie, Sara Incera & Samira Ghaffarzadeh - 2023 - Pragmatics and Cognition 30 (2):296-329.
This study explores the extent to which comprehending negated antonyms in Persian involves the mitigation effect, whereby a negated word means less than its antonym. In two mouse-tracking experiments, participants rated sentences containing negated/non-negated scalar (e.g., tall-short) and complementary (e.g., dead-alive) antonymous adjectives on a continuous scale. Their reaction times and mouse movements were recorded by MouseTracker. The analysis of reaction times shows that negated adjectives are processed slower than their affirmative counterparts. Moreover, the analysis of mouse trajectories shows that (...)

  • Tracking Response Dynamics of Sequential Working Memory in Patients With Mild Parkinson’s Disease.Guanyu Zhang, Jinghong Ma, Piu Chan & Zheng Ye - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
The ability to sequence thoughts and actions is impaired in Parkinson’s disease. In PD, a distinct error pattern has been found in the offline performance of sequential working memory. This study examined how PD’s performance of sequential working memory unfolds over time using mouse tracking techniques. Non-demented patients with mild PD and healthy controls completed a computerized digit ordering task with a computer mouse. We measured response dynamics in terms of the initiation time, ordering time, movement time, and area under (...)

  • Asymmetries Between Direct and Indirect Scalar Implicatures in Second Language Acquisition.Shuo Feng & Jacee Cho - 2019 - Frontiers in Psychology 10:439785.
A direct scalar implicature (DSI) arises when a sentence with a weaker term like sometimes implies the negation of the stronger alternative always (e.g., John sometimes (∼ not always) drinks coffee). A reverse implicature, often referred to as indirect scalar implicature (ISI), arises when the stronger term is under negation and implicates the weaker alternative (e.g., John doesn’t always (∼ sometimes) drink coffee). Recent research suggests that English-speaking adults and children behave differently in interpreting these two types of SI ( (...)
