  1. Italian Teachers' Well-Being Within the High School Context: Evidence From a Large Scale Survey.Barbara Barbieri, Isabella Sulis, Mariano Porcu & Michael D. Toland - 2019 - Frontiers in Psychology 10.
This paper aims to investigate the relationship between Italian teachers’ well-being, socio-demographic characteristics and professional background. Using data from the 2015 wave of the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) we considered information collected by the questionnaire completed by a total of 6,491 teachers in the sampled schools. Moving from existing literature on teachers’ well-being, we investigate several aspects related to the teachers’ working environment, career motivation and investment, and job satisfaction. We assess the variability in the observed outcomes attributable (...)

  • Selecting Socio-scientific Issues for Teaching.Tamara S. Hancock, Patricia J. Friedrichsen, Andrew T. Kinslow & Troy D. Sadler - 2019 - Science & Education 28 (6-7):639-667.
Currently there is little guidance given to teachers in selecting focal issues for socio-scientific issues -based teaching and learning. As a majority of teachers regularly collaborate with other teachers, understanding what factors influence collaborative SSI-based curriculum design is critical. We invited 18 secondary science teachers to participate in a professional development on SSI-based instruction and curriculum design. Through intentional design, we studied how these teachers formed curriculum design teams and how they selected focal issues for SSI-based curriculum units. We developed (...)

  • Assembling the 'Accomplished' Teacher: The performativity and politics of professional teaching standards.Dianne Mulcahy - 2011 - Educational Philosophy and Theory 43 (S1):94-113.
Set within the socio-political context of standards-based education reform, this article explores the constitutive role of teaching standards in the production of the practice and identity of the ‘accomplished’ teacher. It contrasts two idioms for thinking about and studying these standards, the representational and the performative. Utilising the material-semiotic approach of actor-network theory, it addresses the issue of how the representational idiom of teaching standards has become so authoritative that it readily eclipses other ways to think and ‘do’ them. In (...)

  • Enfleshing Embodiment: 'Falling into trust' with the body's role in teaching and learning.Margaret Macintyre Latta & Gayle Buck - 2008 - Educational Philosophy and Theory 40 (2):315-329.
Embodiment as a compelling way to rethink the nature of teaching and learning asks participants to see fundamentally what is at stake within teaching/learning situations, encountering ourselves and our relations to others/otherness. Drawing predominantly on the thinking of John Dewey and Maurice Merleau-Ponty the body's role within teaching and learning is enfleshed through the concrete experiences of one middle-school science teacher attempting to teach for greater student inquiry. Personal, embodied understandings of the lived terms of inquiry enable the science teacher (...)

  • Physical education cooperating teachers in a community of practice in Ireland: participatory action learning action research.Eimear Holland - 2021 - Dissertation, University of Birmingham
The reconceptualisation of school placement (Teaching Council, 2013) poses a challenge to initial teacher education in Ireland. Some criticised the timing (Mulcahy and McSharry, 2013). Others considered it to be too great a professional leap (O’Grady, 2017). This study sought to explore if and how cooperating teachers could develop as mentors in the Irish context, through engagement in a ‘participatory action learning action research’ (PALAR) ‘mentoring community of practice’ (M-CoP). Qualitative data collection methods included: questionnaires with stimulus recall, pre-workshop questions, (...)
