  • Does Religiosity Matter to Value Relevance? Evidence from U.S. Banking Firms.Lamia Chourou - 2020 - Journal of Business Ethics 162 (3):675-697.
    This study examines whether religiosity is associated with the valuation multiples investors assign to fair-valued assets that are susceptible to managerial bias. Using a sample of U.S. banking firms, I find that the value relevance of such assets is higher for firms located in more religious counties than it is for firms located in less religious counties.     This study investigates whether local gambling norms are associated with audit pricing. Using a religion-based measure of local social gambling norms, we find strong evidence that public firms located in U.S. counties with more liberal gambling norms exhibit higher levels of audit fees. This result is consistent with our view that, as an important external risk factor, clients’ local gambling norms influence audit pricing decisions.     Previous studies argue that religious firms are more ethical and thus engage less in accrual earnings management.     Previous studies substantiate that religious social norms influence individual and organizational decisions. Using debt financing settings, we examine whether a firm’s religious environment influences outside parties’ perceptions in contracting with the firm.     Using a panel data of 806 U.S. firms from 2006 to 2015, we find that in their ratings of corporate social responsibility performance, firms with top managers who attended religiously affiliated schools outperform their peers with no such managers.     Using an international sample of banks, we study how differences in religiosity across countries affect earnings management. Given that religiosity is a major source of morality and ethical behavior, it may reduce excessive risk taking and act as deterrence for earnings manipulations.   • Environmental Sustainability and Implied Cost of Equity: International Evidence.Kartick Gupta - 2018 - Journal of Business Ethics 147 (2):343-365.
    In this paper, we examine the relationship between the environmental practices and implied cost of equity. Using a comprehensive sample of 23,301 firm–year observations from 43 countries, we find that an improvement in environmental practices leads to reduction of the implied cost of equity. Further, the results are stronger in countries where country-level governance is weak.     This study examines whether religious belief influences an entrepreneur’s political involvement and further explores the moderating role of corporate philanthropy.   • Does Confucianism Reduce Minority Shareholder Expropriation? Evidence from China.Xingqiang Du - 2015 - Journal of Business Ethics 132 (4):661-716.
    Using a sample of 12,061 firm-year observations from the Chinese stock market for the period of 2001–2011 and geographic-proximity-based Confucianism variables, this study provides strong evidence that Confucianism is significantly negatively associated with minority shareholder expropriation, implying that Confucianism does mitigate agency conflicts between the controlling shareholder and minority shareholders.
