This volume announces a new era in the philosophy of God. Many of its contributions work to create stronger links between the philosophy of God, on the one hand, and mathematics or metamathematics, on the other hand. It is about not only the possibilities of applying mathematics or metamathematics to questions about God, but also the reverse question: Does the philosophy of God have anything to offer mathematics or metamathematics? The doctrine of divine aseity has played a significant role in the development of classical theism. However, very little attention has been paid in recent years to the question of how precisely aseity should be characterized. We argue that this neglect is unwarranted since extant characterizations of this central divine attribute quickly encounter difficulties. In particular, we present a new argument to show that the most widely accepted contemporary account of aseity is inconsistent. Un análisis de las diversas pruebas de la existencia del primer moviente inmóvil, presentes en la Física de Aristóteles, nos permite inferir una serie de cualidades que emergen de aquéllas. Estas cualidades son propias de lo que suele considerarse como una substancia divina. Así, a partir de las diversas pruebas emergen dos tipos de cualidades: por un lado, en relación con la trascendencia del primer moviente inmóvil respecto de la naturaleza, se destaca su inmovilidad, su eternidad, su impasibilidad, su separación (...) con respecto a los restantes entes, su ser inteligencia, su unicidad, su poseer potencia ilimitada, su inmaterialidad, y, por otro lado, en relación con su poder sobre el mundo, se advierte su causalidad sobre el movimiento del mundo, su dominio sobre los entes, su abarcarlos y, en fin, su ser causa del ser y del no ser. Estos atributos encuentran su punto de contacto en aquel atributo, sin nombre, por el cual este agente es un ‘principio no natural que mueve naturalmente’. (shrink)

In this paper, I argue that there is a kind of evil, namely, the unequal distribution of natural endowments, or natural inequality, which presents theists with a new evidential problem of evil. The problem of natural inequality is a new evidential problem of evil not only because, to the best of my knowledge, it has not yet been discussed in the literature, but also because available theodicies, such the free will defense and the soul-making defense, are not adequate responses in (...) the face of this particular evil, or so I argue. In this paper, I sketch an argument for the view that we cannot know (or have good reasons to believe) that God exists. Some call this view “strong agnosticism” but I prefer the term “skeptheism” in order to clearly distinguish between two distinct epistemic attitudes with respect to the existence of God, namely, agnosticism and skepticism. For the skeptheist, we cannot know (or have good reasons to believe) that God exists, since there can be neither conceptual (a priori) nor empirical (...) According to traditional Western theism, God is maximally great (or perfect). More explicitly, God is said to have the following divine attributes: omnipotence, omniscience, and omnibenevolence. In this paper, I present three puzzles about this conception of a maximally great (or perfect) being. The first puzzle about omniscience shows that this divine attribute is incoherent. The second puzzle about omnibenevolence and omnipotence shows that these divine attributes are logically incompatible. The topic of divine omniscience is well-trodden ground, with philosophers and theologians having asked virtually every question there is to ask about it. The questions regarding God's omniscience to be addressed here are as follows. First, is omniscience best understood as maximal propositional knowledge along with maximal experiential knowledge? I argue that it is. Second, is it possible for God to be essentially omniscient? I argue that it is not.
