  1. Longitudinal investigation of moral disengagement among undergraduate engineering students: findings from a mixed-methods study.Dayoung Kim, Brent K. Jesiek & Shiloh James Howland - 2022 - Ethics and Behavior 32 (8):691-713.
The importance of ethics education for undergraduate engineering students has been emphasized due to the manifold impacts of engineering on society. However, little is known about moral disengagement among engineering students, which could potentially lead to unethical engineering practice. Especially, it is not known how engineering students’ moral disengagement changes over the course of their college studies. In this paper, we conducted a longitudinal, mixed-methods study to investigate moral disengagement among undergraduate engineering students (n = 274) using Bandura’s theory of (...)

  • Moral Disengagement at Work: A Review and Research Agenda.Alexander Newman, Huong Le, Andrea North-Samardzic & Michael Cohen - 2020 - Journal of Business Ethics 167 (3):535-570.
Originally conceptualized by Bandura as the process of cognitive restructuring that allows individuals to disassociate with their internal moral standards and behave unethically without feeling distress, moral disengagement has attracted the attention of management researchers in recent years. An increasing body of research has examined the factors which lead people to morally disengage and its related outcomes in the workplace. However, the conceptualization of moral disengagement, how it should be measured, the manner in which it develops, and its influence on (...)

  • Moral disengagement, moral identity, and counterproductive work behavior among emergency nurses.Yanfei Ke & Fuda Li - forthcoming - Nursing Ethics.
Background Morality is a fundamental component of nurses’ daily work. Nurses’ cognitive tendencies toward moral disengagement in high-stress work environments can easily lead them to engage in counterproductive work behaviors that are not conducive to the organization. However, there is limited research on how to mitigate the impact of moral disengagement on counterproductive work behavior. Objective The objective was to explore the impact of moral disengagement on counterproductive work behavior, as well as the reverse regulatory mechanism of moral identity on (...)

  • Public health nurses’ experiences of ethical responsibility: A meta-ethnography.Anne Clancy, Julia Thuve Hovden, Runa Anneli Andersen & Hilde Laholt - 2024 - Nursing Ethics 31 (5):875-895.
Public health nursing is grounded in public health ideologies and fundamental nursing values. Researchers have argued that ethical responsibility from the perspective of the nurse is an understudied phenomenon. This meta-ethnography provides in-depth knowledge of how public health nurses (PHNs) experience ethical responsibility when working to prevent injury and disease, and promote health and well-being in children, young people and their families. There are reciprocal findings across the 10 included studies. The findings reveal that these nurses often feel alone, have (...)

  • Stigmatization in nursing: Theoretical pathways and implications.Darcy Copeland - 2022 - Nursing Inquiry 29 (2):e12438.
Stigmatization of patients exists in nursing and results in less than optimal nursing care and poor patient outcomes. It is also a violation of our code of ethics. In order to eliminate stigmatization from nursing practice, it is necessary to understand how it develops. Two possible theoretical pathways are proposed to explain the development of stigmatization in nursing. These pathways are informed by a conceptual understanding of stigma and theories of professional socialization, professional formation, symbolic interactionism, and social cognitive theory. (...)

  • Current Approaches, Typologies and Predictors of Deviant Work Behaviors: A Scoping Review of Reviews.Salvatore Zappalà, Maha Yomn Sbaa, Elena V. Kamneva, Leonid A. Zhigun, Zhanna V. Korobanova & Anna A. Chub - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
This study provides a scoping review of the recent conceptual developments about the deviant work behavior and counterproductive work behavior constructs. It also examines the specific types of deviant work behavior that have been more consistently investigated in the last decade, and whether they cover the interpersonal or organizational type of deviant behavior. In addition, individual, group, and organizational predictors of deviant work behaviors are examined. A scoping review of reviews was conducted on Scopus and Web of Science databases and (...)
