Luego de estudiar las relaciones de poder en la modernidad, Michel Foucault realizó una conceptualización de la crítica, a la que describió como una actitud de inservidumbre que denuncia al poder por sus efectos de verdad y a la verdad, por sus efectos de poder. Años más tarde, presentó la modernidad como una actitud que busca encontrar los límites que nos han formado como sujetos, para luego atravesarlos. Finalmente, caracterizó el cuidado de sí como una actitud, como una práctica de (...) libertad. En este artículo rastreo las distancias y cercanías entre la actitud crítica, la moderna y la que cuida de sí, para contrastarlas con una actitud que difícilmente puede caracterizarse como una práctica de libertad: el empresario de sí. Esta comparación permite interrogar el potencial de la crítica, la modernidad y el cuidado de sí como prácticas de resistencia o de libertad. (shrink)

This paper questions the use of new technologies as tools of modern surveillance in order to: (a) advance the research done by Michel Foucault on panoptic techniques of surveillance and dominance; and (b) give new insights on the way we use these new surveillance technologies in violation of democratic principles and legal norms. Furthermore, it questions Foucault’s statements on the expansion of Bentham’s Panopticon scheme as a universal model of modern-day democratic institutions. Therefore the purpose of this paper is to (...) (c) shed new light on the various ways the deployment of new technologies reinforces the Panopticon model, and (d) conduct an analysis of the effects produced by the emerging modes of surveillance that empower various new mechanisms of domination and control of individuals. This research paper seeks to (e) examine to what extent technology influences the course of our social, political and behavioral changes; and to propose devices for (f) evaluation and transformation of democratic institutions and practices that rely on the use of modern communication tools and technologies. Our cities have become a new kind of technologically driven Panopticon and this model has achieved perfection as increasingly fragmented, disseminated and ubiquitous device of power and dominance. Le discours psychiatrique s’établit au XIXe siècle par un corps médical qui reproduit des relations de pouvoir : dans le cas de l’hystérie, le corps médical (majoritairement masculin) impose un discours de vérité sur un corps féminin qui est celui de la patiente. C’est la dimension genrée de ce phénomène que nous chercherons à clarifier en ce qui a trait aux relations de pouvoir, en avançant la thèse que les hystériques se dressent comme figure de résistance devant le pouvoir psychiatrique (...) – cette résistance étant rendue possible par la réappropriation d’une parole dérobée dans la production d’un discours de vérité. Pour ce faire, nous présenterons en premier lieu les démarches de Charcot, puis de Freud et Breuer dans les études sur l’hystérie. Nous emprunterons ensuite le cadre conceptuel foucaldien pour analyser les relations de pouvoir qui se trouvent au cœur de ces deux exemples, et nous tenterons finalement de montrer comment les hystériques peuvent être vues comme « militantes », à partir d’une perspective critique et féministe. This article provides a reading and analysis of Foucault’s 1973-4 lecture course Le pouvoir psychiatrique. It begins by situating the course within the wider context of Foucault’s work, notably in relation to Histoire de la folie and the move of the early 1970s to the conceptual tools of power and genealogy. It is argued that Le pouvoir psychiatrique is a rewriting of the last part of Histoire de la folie from the perspective of these new conceptual tools. Analysis then moves (...) to more thematic concerns, showing how this course enriches our understanding of Foucault’s work on the sources of power, the individual and the family, and the spaces of the disciplinary society. Particular focus is given to the role of the army, public health, the hospital, children, women and hospital architecture. The article concludes by showing how the themes of this course, while not worked up for publication themselves, point the way to concerns in Foucault’s later work, notably The History of Sexuality and collaborative work on urban medicine and habitat. This article explores rage in the context of Korean feminist movements. Rage as a corporeal force can be combined with other emotional modalities to achieve consistency, durability, efficiency, and intensity. These modalities are interdependent, and rage, in relation to indignation, becomes a revolutionary affect that changes power dynamics. Women's indignant rage challenges the patriarchal value system and increases women's agency. Korean women deploy the politics of rage to “Escape the Corset” and free themselves from the oppressive devices—patriarchal family structures and (...) traditional notions of femininity and beauty—that oppress women's bodies. The “Escape the Corset” movement, driven by indignant rage, materializes the possibility of resistance and creation that puts an end to the phallic economy of desire and meaning, and it elaborates a new modality of women's life cycle and relation to the world. Unlike indignant rage, a feminist revolutionary tool, rage combined with hatred is a conservative affect that annihilates the possibility of change and maintains the status quo. The politics of rage promotes a deconstruction of the patriarchal system, joining with a subversive and cathartic joy that contains hope for a more just future. (shrink)

Este artículo propone una exégesis de dos de los hitos conceptuales fundamentales con los que Foucault llevó adelante su investigación sobre la medicina como campo de producción de lo “humano” en la modernidad: por un lado, el delineamiento del individuo en el nacimiento de la clínica moderna y, por el otro, el surgimiento de la figura de lo “humano” a partir del proceso de medicalización como correlato de lo que el filósofo denomina la bio-historia. A tal fin, en primer lugar, (...) se analiza la producción de lo “humano” bajo la noción de “individuo” como consecuencia de la “mirada médica”, en Nacimiento de la clínica. Luego, se relaciona esa noción con la de “hombre”, que aparece como su corolario en Las palabras y las cosas, donde esta última figura cobra toda su significación como resultante de la positividad de las ciencias que se producen en tono de él. Finalmente, se realiza un examen de la producción de lo “humano” en las conferencias que Foucault pronuncia en la Universidad del Estado de Río de Janeiro, en 1974, donde la producción de lo “humano” va a aparecer ligada al paradigma de la biopolítica y, específicamente, en el caso de la medicina, de la “bio-historia”, que complementan y precisan los desarrollos previos.
