  1. Problems All the Way Down.Martin Savransky - 2021 - Theory, Culture and Society 38 (2):3-23.
Besieged by ongoing economic crises, global health emergencies, geopolitical instabilities, ecological devastation, and growing political resentments, the intractable nature of the problems that configure the present has never loomed larger or more darkly. But what, indeed, is a problem? Problematising the modern image that treats problems as obstacles to be overcome by the progress of technoscientific knowledge and policy, this introductory article lays the groundwork for a generative conceptualisation of problems. Reweaving intercontinental connections between traditions of French philosophy and American (...)

  • Vitalist Marxism: Georges Canguilhem and the Resistance of Life.Benjamin Prinz & Henning Schmidgen - 2024 - Theory, Culture and Society 41 (4):3-21.
Following Hannah Arendt’s insights into the affinities between Marxism and the philosophy of life, this article reconstructs a theoretical position that we propose to call ‘vitalist Marxism’. This position conceives of life not only as an essential foundation of the production process, but also as a critical resource for resistance to the capitalist logic of exploitation. We highlight the role Georges Canguilhem (1904–95) played in developing this position, in particular by depicting tools and machines as ‘organs of life’. Drawing on (...)

• Beyond materialist green transitions: sketching a vitalist approach for evaluating R&I policy towards deep green transformation.Johannes M. Waldmüller - 2024 - Journal of Global Ethics 20 (2):151-170.
Situated within the growing literature on green alternatives to research and innovation-led green transition approaches, this paper sketches the contours of an emerging transition policy evaluation matrix aiming at going beyond contemporary (new) materialist concerns. To do so, I introduce a vitalist focus on life and establishing all connectedness as a long-term normative goal of just and deep global development policy. For this purpose, I draw from key insights from the recent interim evaluation of the European Framework program ‘Horizon Europe’, (...)

  • ‘This scene is itself living’: Buildings as landscapes in transatlantic human geography, 1870–1970.Peter Ekman - 2021 - History of the Human Sciences 34 (3-4):336-361.
What do houses do to the people who live with them? In what sense are houses themselves living things? If they live and act, how to conceive of the relationship between built and natural landscapes, and between environment and life more broadly? This article considers three moments at which human geographers have attempted to answer these questions without submitting to visions of environmental causation and constraint favoured by determinists, who dominated the discipline into the early 20th century. The article begins (...)
