  • Towards a Political Philosophy of Management: Performativity & Visibility in Management Practices.François-Xavier de Vaujany, Jeremy Aroles & Pierre Laniray - 2019 - Philosophy of Management 18 (2):117-129.
Phenomenological, process-based and post-Marxist approaches have stressed the immanent nature of the ontogenesis of our world. The concept of performativity epitomizes these temporal, spatial and material views. Reality is always in movement itself: it is constantly materially and socially ‘performed’. Other views lead to a pre-defined world that would be mostly revealed through sensations (i.e. ‘representational perspectives’). These transcendental stances assume that a subject, although pre-existing experience, is the absolute condition of possibility of it. In this paper, we develop another (...)

  • The limits of computation: A philosophical critique of contemporary Big Data research.Petter Törnberg & Anton Törnberg - 2018 - Big Data and Society 5 (2).
This paper reviews the contemporary discussion on the epistemological and ontological effects of Big Data within social science, observing an increased focus on relationality and complexity, and a tendency to naturalize social phenomena. The epistemic limits of this emerging computational paradigm are outlined through a comparison with the discussions in the early days of digitalization, when digital technology was primarily seen through the lens of dematerialization, and as part of the larger processes of “postmodernity”. Since then, the online landscape has (...)

  • Theorizing Relations between Past, Present and Future: Interactions between Process and Historical Organizational Studies through Whitehead’s Process Philosophy.Queila Regina Souza Matitz, Karine Francisconi Chaerki & Sergio Filipe Chaerki - 2020 - Philosophy of Management 20 (2):201-217.
Our theoretical essay is an attempt to stimulate approximations and interactions between process philosophy - principally as proposed by Alfred North Whitehead (1861–1947) - and historical organizational studies. In order to reach this goal, we outline some theoretical and methodological possibilities of intersections among these two perspectives. Following the presentation of central concepts borrowed from a strong view of process, we present organizational history as a continuous emerging process of becoming. Following, we discuss recent literature reviews and attempts to categorize (...)

  • Pragmatic Truths in Organization Studies.Matt Statler & Perttu Salovaara - 2017 - Philosophy of Management 16 (3):265-278.
Truth matters for organization studies, but it has been neglected as a topic of research. Positivist scholars do not tend to question assumptions about the relationship between knowledge and the world, while critical theorists tend to view ‘truth’ as an outdated, metaphysical way to describe it. However, the pragmatic philosophical tradition of inquiry into truth has not yet received enough attention within organization studies. This essay presents a genealogical account of that tradition by conducting a close reading of texts by (...)
