  1. The impact of implicit theories on resilience among Chinese nurses: The chain mediating effect of grit and meaning in life.Yixun Tang, Changjiu He, Lanling Feng, Dongmei Wu, Xiaojun Zhou, Tao Li, Lina He, Qiao Cai & Yuchuan Yue - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Implicit theories refer to assumptions people hold about different domains, also known as mindsets. There are two implicit theories on the malleability of one’s ability: entity theory and incremental theory. They constrain and regulate people’s understanding and responses to an individual’s behavior, leading to different social cognitive patterns and behavioral responses. Resilience is a positive adaptation in highly stressful situations that represents mechanisms for coping with and transcending difficult experiences, i.e., a person’s ability to successfully adapt to change, resist the (...)

  • Music practice and participation for psychological well-being: A review of how music influences positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment.Adam M. Croom - 2015 - Musicae Scientiae: The Journal of the European Society for the Cognitive Sciences of Music 19:44-64.
In “Flourish,” Martin Seligman maintained that the elements of well-being consist of “PERMA: positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment.” Although the question of what constitutes human flourishing or psychological well-being has remained a topic of continued debate among scholars, it has recently been argued in the literature that a paradigmatic or prototypical case of human psychological well-being would largely manifest most or all of the aforementioned PERMA factors. Further, in “A Neuroscientific Perspective on Music Therapy,” Stefan Koelsch also suggested (...)

  • The affective tone of narration and posttraumatic growth in organ transplant recipients.Wojciech Laskowski, Rafał Kieszek, Jolanta Gozdowska, Marta Boczkowska, Mateusz Zatorski & Mariusz Zięba - 2015 - Polish Psychological Bulletin 46 (3):376-383.
The aim of the study was to verify the hypothesis that positive affective tone of narratives is connected to the experience of posttraumatic growth among transplant patients. Kidney transplant patients and liver transplant patients participated in the study. In the first stage, about 10 weeks after transplant, the participants told two stories about important, freely chosen events from their lives. During the second meeting 10-12 months later we measured posttraumatic growth. Results indicated that the affective tone of narratives about past (...)

  • Are Chinese student teachers’ life purposes associated with their perceptions of how much their university supports community service work?Fei di GaoJiang - 2018 - Journal of Moral Education 47 (2):201-216.
This article examines Chinese student teachers’ perceived university support for community service at the start of the semester in relation to three levels of purpose: expectations to feel self-transcendent emotions while doing service work, the strength of their sense of purpose and endorsement of specific purposes focused on social benefits. American questionnaires translated into Chinese were completed online by 284 students in a teachers’ university in northeast China. Compared to student teachers who perceived a lack of university support, those who (...)

  • Self-transcendent positive emotions increase spirituality through basic world assumptions.Patty Van Cappellen, Vassilis Saroglou, Caroline Iweins, Maria Piovesana & Barbara L. Fredrickson - 2013 - Cognition and Emotion 27 (8):1378-1394.
Spirituality has mostly been studied in psychology as implied in the process of overcoming adversity, being triggered by negative experiences, and providing positive outcomes. By reversing this pathway, we investigated whether spirituality may also be triggered by self-transcendent positive emotions, which are elicited by stimuli appraised as demonstrating higher good and beauty. In two studies, elevation and/or admiration were induced using different methods. These emotions were compared to two control groups, a neutral state and a positive emotion (mirth). Self-transcendent positive (...)
