  • Establishing and Registering Identity in the Dutch Republic.Henk Looijesteijn & Marco Hd van Leeuwen - 2012 - In Looijesteijn Henk & van Leeuwen Marco Hd (eds.), Registration and Recognition: Documenting the Person in World History. pp. 211.
The Dutch Republic had a broad range of means to establish an individual's identity, and a rudimentary ‘system’ of identity registration, essentially established at the local levels of town and parish. This chapter seeks to provide a description of the ways in which the Dutch established an individual's identity. The various registration methods covered almost the entire population of the Dutch Republic at some stage in their life, and it is argued that on balance identity registration in the Dutch Republic (...)

  • Human culture and science: Equality and inequality as foundations of scientific thought. [REVIEW]Bert Mosselmans & Ernest Mathijs - 2000 - Foundations of Science 5 (3):339-378.
We argue that the concepts of `human equality' and `inequality' play an important role in the structure of science and philosophy. When the value of `human inequality' predominates, scientific categories are formed in accordance with the principle of `hierarchical differentiation' and concepts remain closely tied to the objects they are referring to. Following Mirowski we define this as the `anthropometric stage' of human thought and development. Contrary, Mirowski's `syndetic stage' refers to societies where the value of `human equality' prevails. Here (...)

  • Oldenbarnevelt and fishes. Satirical prints from the 12-years truce.Jan Waszink - 2020 - History of European Ideas 46 (7):903-915.
ABSTRACT This paper discusses the intended argument and conceptual backgrounds of two satirical engravings published during the Truce Conflicts in the Dutch Republic (ca. 1611–1621), with a special focus on the use of fish imagery and its political implications. The case under consideration shows a now historic perception of (giant) fishes employed for disparaging purposes in the context of a deeply polarised society over issues of religious orthodoxy and toleration.

  • Why Study Liturgical Mysticism? A Historico-Systematic Theological Reflection.Ineke Cornet & Martin Sebastian Kallungal - 2010 - Bijdragen 71 (1):3-26.
This article re-introduces the notion of liturgical mysticism from both the perspectives of systematic theology and Church history. The authors adopt an interdisciplinary approach grounded in theology aiming to revisit the concept of liturgical mysticism in order to contribute to developing an adequate interpretive model for mystical texts. The article introduces the notion of liturgical mysticism firstly by a systematic-theological fundamental analysis of Christian mystical experience, showing the uniqueness of that experience and the possible interconnections with liturgy; secondly, by studying (...)
